one-time rename ability
in update 1.8.561...
- Experimental simplifying of first-time character creation for Android, automatically choosing name and nation selection. Additional characters may be created with full manual control.
when pilots who were force-named something reach combat 3, as part of the congratulatory mission (the same one that explains deneb, hive skirmishes, and other things), these pilots are also able to make a one-time name change, overwriting their auto-generated name with something they desire.

+1 awesome idea. Too many times we hear players asking how to change their names after starting. If they are continuing on with the game part combat 3, then they might be here for the long term. Giving them their own identity is a good reward.
+1 I fail to see a downside to this and it would stop (most) of the how do I rename my character requests

Rather than it be linked to the mission, or a level, it could be a part of the email linking process. This way it also makes it less likely to be used for evilness (imagine own scenario here), and is a part of an already existing process. It could be as simple as a dialogue popping up on the website (or the game client if all account actions are moved there) after the email is confirmed, offering to rename the initial character that was created. Don't know how hard that would be, but as all renames seem to currently be developer only I would guess the tool for this would need to be created either route.
