manu connie and conq capella
How about this:
Instead of making the Capella the next player-manufacturable capship, make the Constellation available to manu, and make greyspace faction capellas conquerable.
So, making the Connie a manu mission is not really the discussion to be had-- that's pretty straightforward: less than a capella, but more than a trident...a reasonable stepping-stone in the capship manufacturing hierarchy, but not out of reach for the average builder (as we all imagine the capella to be)...the larger convo is the possibility of making capellas a conquerable option and how that might be workable...
Theoretical Capella Conquering Mechanics:
1) All greyspace faction capellas (except corvus) would be "conquerable" while in greyspace _only_. The act of conquering a capella would result in temp-KOS for that faction and a "Hate" rating afterwards.
2) Setting up the capella for "conquering" would require killing its entire retinue, dropping it's shields, and then camping in its dock for 30sec, kinda similar to conq stations.
3) The "conqueror" then receives an "owner" key for the capella and is considered the _only_ pilot, much in the same way as player capships work. Damage incurred during the conquering process would have to be repaired in the field.
4) A "conquered" capella can only be owned and operated by players for 24 hrs...after that, it goes derelict, all players are ejected, and it self-destructs.
5) However, during that 24hr period, the capella can only be owned and operated by a player that is logged-in...the owner key can be handed off to another player, but if the current owner logs out, the ownership could be default transferred to the next "user" key..or lost entirely.
6) Subsequently, while the capella is "conquered", it can be "re-conquered" by another player, but the 24hr period does not reset and the new "owner" would only have what time was left from the original "conquering".

We would need automated turrets before we can fly those huge ships AND defend them on an even playing field. I do remember people saying how HARD it is to fly a capella. A connie would be equally as hard to fly I bet.
+1
I wasn't sure how I wanted to respond to this because it kinda relates to several suggestions in the past regarding a conquerable capital ship. I know that Incarnate has responded to those threads with more or less a YES YES YES.. and it's just an issue of "it's a lot of damn work and will wait on other things first"...
but since you brought up again, you get my upvote on this suggestion. I don't really care how the rules or logic of it works out, I just think a conquerable cap ship would be a really awesome addition to the game in general.
