+1 to email/sms

Email I can do. If your mobile provider has a generalized email-to-SMS gateway based around your number (AT&T does, for instance), then you can use an email system to send to that. We could have a dedicated "immediate notification address" in your account info, or something, that optionally differs from the newsletter/ticket-type address.
A dedicated SMS gateway or service hookup is a bit out of scope.
App Notifications are something we've wanted for years, but they've gotten a lot more complicated and limited over the interim time as well, and the game is not currently set up to receive push-data or pop up notifications. That requires us to run some kind of constant service on the device.
So, when I say "email", I mean "email".
I'm aware of other things, which would be nice, but I am not volunteering those options at this time.

I love the idea of upgradable defenses.
Email would be great incarnate, thanks.
For those that do not know their email to text gateway address here are a few.
AT&T: phonenumber@txt.att.net
T-Mobile: phonenumber@tmomail.net
Sprint: phonenumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com
Verizon: phonenumber@vtext.com or phonenumber@vzwpix.com
Virgin Mobile: phonenumber@vmobl.com
If you've got another carrier, then simply google search "your carrier email to txt" and you'll probably find it pretty easily.

Tracfone – number@mmst5.tracfone.com
Ting – number@message.ting.com
Boost Mobile – number@myboostmobile.com
U.S. Cellular – number@email.uscc.net
Metro PCS – number@mymetropcs.com
There are a few others as well. I've never heard of Ting myself.

Cool, I'll see what I can do on the email thing (no immediate promises, but we'll check it out).
Let's continue the discussion around upgradable defenses.

I'm super down with what we all float said. Temporarily paying (let's say like 3-5mil) for a temporary, mercenary force to guard the station. Or a turret buff overall. Like they will float out to their positions and then go stationary. What if instead they gently rotated around the station?
I'm +1 on the idea of being able to hire mercenaries. Perhaps delay their arrival for some period of time after the mission is taken, to avoid the ability to quickly log in and spam mercs only when the station is actually under attack. I know that with guild bank accounts in the trillions, having to pay 10M/day for mercs isn't going to bankrupt anyone, but it's at least something for guilds to do with their spoils.

There are no guild banks in the trillions, or anything remotely close to it.
