Mines vs Radar

Apr 29, 2021 haxmeister link
SYNOPSIS

Mines should not be detectable on standard radar equipment. It defies the nature of such a weapon and only ships that have equipped a special type of radar should be able to detect them. This could be implemented in such a way that buffs the usability of mines in VO while also allowing certain NPCs to not be fooled into mass explosions.

APPLICATION IDEAS

1. Mines should not be visible on standard radar.

2. Special radar equipment should be available to detect mines (could be a feature of storm radar extender).

3. NPCs could be equipped or not equipped to detect mines depending on the type of NPC or other factors that would reduce the density of explosions (maintaining the fixed issue of large explosions).

4. This could coincide with many other suggestions regarding the detection of mines that should be concealed by hulks, debris or asteroids.

5. Having special radar for mines allows players to actually target the mine.

SIDE NOTES

Is it a practical/reasonable idea that the player/NPC that sets a mine may also be able to target it and detonate it from some distance without having to zoom in to shoot it? (allows detonation on the run)

I'm not particularly for removing them from the radar altogether, would make more sense if they just showed up as those innocuous light grey dots like asteroids.

That way they're much stealthier but they wouldn't be completely invisible to radar either.

I like the idea in general. I'd say have them show up as grey dots inside of 750M. That's enough warning for those who are paying attention.
