This is unacceptable, people should not be using bot names as player names. Come to think of it, they shouldn't have to be told that either.

I mean... why not? They show up as player pilots on the list. If they want to role play as hive bots that sounds cool. Would be even cooler if we could fly hive ships .
I think it seems interesting. This is the kind of game where people have the opportunity to create their own play style. We're not so boxed in that we can't role play outside the expected norms or the game-provided scenarios.
Perhaps you never noticed that all NPC names start with an asterisk.

And how do you suppose we bar people from typing in a bot name? Please take time to think things through.
@death456 the same way the client filters out profanity
@draugath of course I know that, it's hard to spend 100's of hours on plugin development and not figure that out. Thank you for your efforts in making that job easier.
But I also know how human vision works and in split second decision making the mind does not always make such trivial distinctions. At the very least it could cause a hesitation that could prove fatal.
There is no practical reason to name your player after a hive bot other than deception. The client should be filtering this and it is therefore an exploitation.

I can tell you in EVE people do this all the time were they name their characters after Aspects or NPC's in the game or commands Fleet commanders give often. It's RP rather it may be kind of sad do to things like this and be trolling about it. It would be a horrible way to stifle peoples character's personality and what they can name their characters.
I hate ONE and how they RP by screaming "Hail Serco!" all the time but I would never censure them its how sercos are. I don't take it personal.
And when you think about it. Usually PVP happens in grey/UIT space (well most of it) I don't think an NPC hive can fly most player ships, corvult, hound, prom and so on. Simple PVP awareness.
In closing restricting peoples ability to Role Play is horrible even if the guy is being super annoying. By Role play I mean acting like a serco, uit, itani, naming stuff after lore and so on. Within the limits of the rules set by the game owners.
Block him or kill him or just leave 100. this game is called "Vendetta" Online after all.

+1 for We all float's idea of being able to use Hive ships. I would add that adding another playable faction (Hive) might make the game more interesting.

I agree, we should be able to play as hive of we want.
I started playing as Dentek Collector XX-nnn ages ago to add some humour in the chat but I've stuck with it as it's added some unexpected fun to the game hopefully for others too. Everybody apart from really new noobs knows about the asterisk so it's not fooling many but I think it helps role play. It is nice though to scare noobs by following them between sectors. An added bonus is that the occasional noob attacks me first in nation space !

Calling this "roll playing" sounds a lot better than calling it "cheating" which is what it really is. Roll playing in gaming is about following the established story line and has nothing to do with imitating something that you are not.
"A role-playing video game (commonly referred to as simply a role-playing game or an RPG as well as a computer role-playing game or a CRPG) is a video game genre where the player controls the actions of a character (and/or several party members) immersed in some well-defined world, usually involving some form of character development by way of recording statistics"
What you are suggesting has nothing to do with game play and is in fact the antithesis of role playing. Players oddly imitating npc robots, which provide a long established aspect of the game, muddy the story line and ultimately degrade the game.
I think it much more likely that your motivation is deception and if VO had intended for players to be named like hive bots then the auto naming feature would reflect that fact, and it does not.

How is this cheating?
1) Actual hive bots do not (usually) roam the galaxy, and the ones that (very rarely) do are never hostile towards none-mission players. If you see a hive bot outside of botting sector? Well wouldn't you consider that strange and be prompted to investigate further? My first thought certainly wouldn't be "oh here is a hive bot, it must be none hostile".
2) Actual hive bots ALL belong to the Unaligned faction
3) ALL NPC's names start with a *
If you cannot judge if one of these names is a real character at a glance, then you are playing the wrong game. In no way shape or form could this be considered "cheating", even if you were dumb enough to think for a second that one was an actual hive bot? Then wouldn't you be expecting that hive bot to attack you anyway? What would disguising yourself as one get you? It certainly wouldn't be a good way to create a "friendly looking" character.
I think you simply do not like these chosen persons RP, and this is fine. I also think it is a little bit silly, and maybe think players should be restricted from using these names, but come on friend, let us not make this molehill into the mountain that it is not, this is far from a "cheat" or an "exploit", and is certainly no way to hide from players, as hive bots ARE hostile. None of your accusations make sense for this very reason, so pick another track, that line is worn out.

You can filter out NPC names from appearing in your chat when they/you enter a sector. If you still assume they are a bot, that's on you.
The debate typed out here in this forum speaks for it's self. In my humble opinion this argument is as strong as a wet bag. With the facts presented as of today. If the argument changes I would love to debate it again.
Limiting a person's expression is bad in every case. Even if its silly. or annoying I wish that not on anyone friends or foe.
first of all: i think the **easily identifiable** pseudo-bot names are hilarious and that it is merely a level-up from other pro-hive roleplay things in the past...you can't quash player creativity.
second: +1 to being able to fly hive ships
