Station trading

So, after reading inc and davejohn's response to my thread in general, I'd like to repost part of Dave's reply here

"Every station needs a time dependant flow of basic goods to survive. For years the stations have been paying a fixed rate for goods which quite clearly is unrealistic. If nobody is selling water to a station then it cannot survive, the price for water should therefore rise. The same applies to all basic items needed for survival.

If a station does not have that basic level of supply it can manufacture and sell nothing. If the basic needs are satisfied then the station can purchase material to manufacture other items. Again , if those are in short supply the price should rise."

I suggest that stations consume goods relating to the services the station provides. If the station has no food or water, nothing can be done at all, and everything comes to a standstill. No spaceship parts? You can't resupply/repair/rearm your spaceship at that station. No mining equipment? The station stops producing ores that the player could buy and possibly sell to a refinery station or something.

If a station had an excess of x it needed for its own use it would sell that at a discount, and vice versa.

Another thing that would be interesting would be some new repeatable manufacturing missions. A player would want to manufacture water, using Aquean mined, and sell to a station somewhere else which was out of water.

Thoughts?

Hell if the station runs out of food and water, or at least critically low on them then it should be ordering MORE shipments of them.

After enough time goes by the station would only have a skeleton crew. That would mean it should still sell EC89's and free batteries, and powercells, and you could still access your own inventory, but repairs, reloading purchasing commodities would be gone until more of the life-essential items reach the station.

All the stuff davejohn says sounds reasonable and also sounds like it would be fun, giving us players a more active role in maintaining the stations ability to function. We may need a little help from the NPCs to supply everything to keep all those stations running with the caveat that the NPC convoys could be stopped by players and unrats as well

Stations do not need to have water deleiverd because stations know how to make water.

Making water requires sources of hydrogen and oxygen. Even reclamation systems lose a bit of water each cycle.

Using water as an example:

lets say a station uses 100 cus of water a day
The station maintains a reserve of 10 days or 1000 cus

each day the station should issue a mission to mine 100 cus of aquean ore at current price.
If the stations reserve falls below 700 or 7 days then it issues a 300 cu mission at 25 percent above current price

at 500 cus it issues a mission for 300 cus at double market price and sends out an npc mission for 200 cus

at 300 cus docking for ships not carrying aquean or water is suspended and price becomes triple market

at 100 cus a riot of equal numbers of sf and npc rioters ensues in the nfz with any ship entering the nfz becoming a target for either side.(annouced in news) missions to help put down the riot could be generated and provide large faction rewards if completed.

The exact chain of events could vary from station to station with responses determined by player faction , ship cargo and weapon loadout. npc missions from other stations could also be run dependant of thier relationship.

Complicated but this is a single commodity and how it could interact with the game to create a more dynamic enviroment.

Water food and power are all critical to the stations operation so they are good candidates to use as drivers for both the economy and enhanced gameplay. The devs have not actually specified how VO gets its power. It could be from exotic ore or solar powered. Carbonic (oil) might be a good choice for common usage while pyronic or xith might provide additonal power of heavy industry.

I think a similar situation should happen with food. Also, any ship with water (or the needed resources) in the hold during a riot is exempt from attack from rioters.

I was also thinking that if a station runs out of a particular resource, everything stops unless it is re supplied. After about a week of this low power state, the station self-destructs, and a new station is built in a random empty sector in that system.
