What if we could buy capships with real money?

It's a bad idea. The problem is that it cuts out huge swaths of gameplay, and not just your gameplay. The way it is now, if somebody wants a capship they have to go through a considerable amount of work moving cargo around the universe. This creates opportunities for traders to find jobs working for other humans instead of just doing bland procurement runs or gaming the shop system. Some of the parts require ingredients to be harvested from roids or bots, creating additional jobs for miners and botters. All these goodies being moved around also create openings for piracy, which in turn create openings for people to find jobs hunting pirates and escorting players.

If you just bribe Incarnate to let you skip over all that, you put all those people out of work and make the game boring.

We've previous talked (on here) about the notion of letting people purchase capships without insurance, for real money. So like.. for $N you get a Goliath, and then someone blows it up, and you're sad because it's gone away for good (unless you buy another one for $N). That would still create a path of "immediate capship ownership", or at least experimenting with ownership, by people with money-and-no-time, and maintain the economic structure that Pizzasgood describes, for those who are really looking for long-term usability and ownership.

I have mixed feelings about all that, but it's a possibility. That's the closest we've ever gotten to having capship purchasing, per-se, at least in previous discussions.

I would be against being able to buy a Goli with real cash unless it had less grid for weapons or shields or something like that.
Buying for real cash would be moving this game more toward the "Pay to Win" type of game and not the "skill based" game that we have come to love.

BY,

That's why something between the XC and the goliath might be a good compromise. What I would do, is open up crystal to everyone, and make that item cost crystal in addition to credits. That way someone could grind to get the item, or buy some crystal. It would have no insurance. So if it goes boom, well that is it.

As long as it's not insured and more than $100 I'm for it.

+1. I would love to blow up some uninsured capships

I noticed the post about the crystal aspect and kind of like it. Of course premium players shouldn't be required to spend crystals on anything but "special" things like a one-time capship, but that could be a way to do it and not exclude those who would like to still grind one. ... That idea is... growing on me.

Yup, the original idea was to use the Crystal system to support purchase, to allow the flexibility of acquisition.

I really have no idea about price points, though. The idea of someone losing $100 in an instant, because someone ran across some unexpected Unrats, seems pretty harsh?

Not a fan of pay-to-win games.

Work for your cappie, earn that ship!

IMHO, if it's gonna be done tho, make it require 10/10/10/10/10 or higher.

Remen,

With the exception of the mining lic, all the rest can be brought up to 10 in under 24 hours if you know what you are doing. The mining part is the most time consuming. If some sort of accomplishment is going to be assigned to this kind of item, make it something more grindy. Like the master prospector badge.

Kinda what I meant.

10/10/10/10/10 was a suggestion... maybe a trading badge to enable buying a dent, or mining badge to buy a goli, or combat badge to buy one of the other cappies.
