Look to steer/no fixed world?
Is there a way to look-to-steer without the fixed world? Most people like to sit down as if in a cockpit while they fly in VR, and the only way to do this seems to be with the controller, which is clunky in battle. I just spent an hour trying to figure it out. it would be great to sit in our comfy cockpit and look to steer while using the controller for throttle, target select, roll, etc... Also I couldn't seem to get tilt to steer working, although I've never liked that method.
Fixed world? Sorry not quite understanding what you mean by this. There are 4 options for VO's head tracking, and the one "Look to steer, fixed HUD" seems to work well for me and sounds a lot like what you are asking for. You can look a little or a lot to each side, and the ship will turn a little or a lot until you recenter your head. You can even roll with this mode by tilting your head slightly. Your HUD will stay focused in the direction of "front", but there are also options where the HUD floats in front of your head, and one that works like a fixed view, but with the HUD only following you.
Advanced Options > VR Setting > Look to steer modes
If you are hoping for a "look to turn" and have the ship pointing to where you turn with no delay, this isn't possible due to the way ships fly. Each ship has it's own turn speed, so will take a moment to catch up to where you look at. This is the same on PC, Android, etc etc.
Maybe you mean something entirely different, but it is possible to fly your ship from an armchair, with or without a controller, although I heartily recommend you use one. Turning your ship is one thing, but dodging incoming fire at the same time?

I understand the ship steering response lag. I currently use 3rd person look to steer/tilt to roll, with the gear controller for throttle, target select, trigger, etc... This gives you the "armchair pilot" ability, but ONLY in 3rd person perspective. When you switch to 1st person you are locked in a "fixed universe" where you must stand and turn or use a swivel chair. I want to sit stationary and look to steer in 1ST PERSON, with head-tilt to roll and gear controller for ship functions. Is that possible?
EDIT: when I said the controller is clunky in battle I just meant that looking to aim is much more accurate and easy than aiming with the controller. Obviously the controller is always needed for strafe, trigger, throttle, etc... My main focus here s getting a FIRST PERSON, look-to-steer control model where we can sit stationary.

Yes. This is how I prefer to control my ship in combat while using VR, currently. It's one of the options Yoda alluded to.

Thanks both for responding. I'll take another look. I'm playing on gear VR with the gear controller, and maybe the setting options are different than pc? The "4 VO head tracking options" that Yoda mentioned are listed as "controller steering" and 2 of them are "look to steer" with 2 hud options. 2 are controller steering with hud options. When I use either of those two "look to steer" options I have to use 3PP or I am locked in a fixed universe and have to use a swivel chair. I feel I've tried every option, and I just can't seem to figure it out. I'm still entry level so please be patient :)
I'm also on GearVR, and play in the first person. Are you using the Oculus store version of VO? Or the HD version from Google play store? I have used the GearVR version a _lot_ and never had a problem with the look to steer modes nor do they act as you describe. I guess the HD version may have different options, but that version shouldn't be the one you are using on GearVR.
In my VR options menu, the settings are like this (ignore the colour):
All of these options except off enable some kind of head steering, it just enables the HUD or VR cockpit to turn or be fixed. The option I have highlighted is what I use in combination with an Xbox controller, although I can confirm it works with the gear controller too. Enabling head control does not disable the controller unless you disable it's function under the controls menu. I use both to fly; controller for getting about, and head tracking when i need finer aim.

Wtf, I've never seen that part of the VR options menu before. Mine has "controller steering" instead of "steer with head tracking" in that part of the menu. I downloaded through the vr Oculus store within the gear vr home suite. Not through the play store
Is there perhaps something I need to change in a different settings subcategory that allows me to access head steering options? Under the "controls" subcategory I have "keyboard/accelerometer" selected
So I made some progress that was met with more frustration. When I open the game with my controller not connected it gives me the look to fly options. So when I discovered that, it got me pretty stoked. Then I reconnect my controller to see if I could use it for throttle and everything, and it automatically took over the steering. In the options menu it still says I'm set to look to fly but in reality the VR controller is doing the steering. I'm getting really frustrated and I just don't get it.
So, when I read "gear controller" my brain automatically translated that to 'the controller I use for gear'. I actually use a separately purchased Bluetooth gamepad in GearVR.
Yeah, when I said "you are going to need a controller" I mean a proper controller, when you said you have one I presumed you meant you used a proper controller too. I use an Xbox360 pad, the GearVR controller is alright but it is only 3dof and isn't very useful, although I suppose it would be possible to use for things none combat related...
I guess the devs would have to chime in on this one.

Basically, we need to make a special option for this case, as the current over-ride behaviour doesn't give the options desired.
