Voting system for the suggestions forum

It would be nice to have some kind of voting system for the suggestions forum.

we really don't need votes - the suggestions forum is for *suggesting* a change to the game and a place for it to be refined. in the end, it depends on if the suggestion fits with Incarnate's vision for the game and implementation time required.

I've long considered this as well.

I'm not against the notion of voting. I mean, it's just codifying the current "+1" and "-1" status quo into some more-elegant system. We don't take action based on "vote counts", and the forum is really more about the process of idea refinement and feedback; but people acclaiming a particular version of a suggestion is still useful input.

One could look at it as making the process of interacting with the forums easier (sorting topics by highest-voted but non-implemented?), and that would be good.

But, like many other things, it falls under "no time right now, not sure when we'll get to it".

If there is voting, it needs to not be anonymous, as anonymous votes would actually be a downgrade from the status quo. With the current +1/-1 posts, each "vote" has a name and associated reputation (or lack thereof) attached to it. This lets me attach weight to those opinions. If I make a suggestion and people I respect drop a bunch of -1 posts, then that's a good indication that I need to rethink my idea. On the other hand, if those -1s are mostly coming from the village idiots or random newbs who don't know what they're talking about yet, I can just ignore them. With an anonymous vote tally, however, there would be no way to distinguish between these scenarios. There will need to be a publicly accessible list of who voted which way.

I agree, I'm not interested in anonymity here either. It could be like a little one-line micro-post with the person's name and vote, perhaps.

Or, perhaps the concept of "voting" wouldn't even be per-thread, but per individual post, as some ideas in a given thread often have merit, and are surrounded by a bunch of others (even the OP) that are not-so-good. We might have the equiv of a thumbs-up or thumbs-down on a per-post basis, which when "hovered-over" could show the list of people who responded individually, while also showing the aggregate totals in the particular post's date/time/poster line.

Of course, that can be a bit more complex to "use" in a meaningful way, for someone like me, having to track down context for embedded posts.. often requires reading pages of a thread that leads up to a post that's on a couple of sentences.

Anyway, I agree, but I still have little idea when such an improvement might actually come to pass. While it would be of value, I have a lot more pressing issues.
