Make the map layout matter in Deneb
Currently either side can claim sectors in Deneb by winning battles, but the specific sectors claimed don't really feel like they matter. What if sectors held by the opposition interrupted jumps, similar to ion storms? An artificial delay could also be imposed upon arrival in an opposing sector before jumping out would be allowed. Combined with conquerable stations and perhaps weighted sector values (asteroid sectors should be worth more than empty sectors, for example), this could make things a lot more interesting. Enemy territory would start to feel like territory and be burdensome to cross.

I don't think the the jump interruption would have a major impact on anyone, not many people usually look to cross the system.
Here is something that would make it more interesting, mining fleets of whichever side wins Deneb start occupying asteroid belts and strip it of resources. This would make the whole thing appear more dynamic rather than just a bunch of tiles changing color. Killing these fleets would drop valuable ore but would also trigger enemy strike forces to hunt you.
I don't think any skirms take place in asteroid belts, but these should usually be where the larger skirmishes take place whereas the empty sectors host fighter and small skirms.

People crossing the entire system aren't really the point. It's about making it feel like your side is pushing outward from your wormhole, rather than just magically jumping into a location anywhere in the system with impunity. Say there's an Itani controlled station that the Serco want to attack. If there are a bunch of Itani controlled sectors in front of the station, the Serco will have to either route around, take the slow path through, or spend the time to conquer those sectors so they can make subsequent jumps without interruption. Once they capture the station itself, they then face the decision of whether to spend time capturing a buffer zone of sectors between it and the Itani-held regions to slow them down if they try to reclaim it, or whether to spend that time carving out a path toward some other valuable target.
And yeah, there could be mining operations and stuff going on to help support the war effort. Maybe the conquerable stations offer more gear or better prices based on how many asteroid sectors your side has that can be reached from that station without having to traverse contested sectors. Then attackers can choose between attacking the station directly, attacking the mining operation, or attacking the path between the two.
