New Damage Model
You may have noticed the ship model on your HUD and that some parts change color once they have been damaged. I always wondered what it does but I don't think it does anything besides showing where you get hit the most(Please correct me if I'm wrong). So I propose that if a ship part gets damaged and changes color this part of the ship receives more damage. This would especially be good for big cap ships and encourage a group of players to focus on one specific part instead of just shooting wherever they want. Let's say everyone shoots at the right engine of a Trident, this part would then change color and take more damage if damage is done to that area.
Does not affect shielded ships.

Make it so if you hit the engine enough you decrease it's movement speed. If you destroy both engines you've disabled it's ability to move and it just drifts for a short time, shooting the bridge destroys the pilot and leaves the capship defenseless. That bridge part might be to much but idk. Making it so destroying key parts of a capship have effects on the ship itself would be pretty cool in my opinion

I suggested something similar way back in the day. The answer I received from Incarnate is that they have plans for this.
Yeah, that was always the intended goal for the system. But, like a lot of our intended goals, it.. didn't really happen.
But, the Suggestion is still a good one :). It's something I still think about, especially in the area of being able to disable ships, or impact enemies in different ways, which has broader ramifications for capital ships.

Wouldn't even change regular fighter PvP as you can't really aim a shot at a specific location on another ship.

-1 to fighters being disabled; the longer a fight goes, the better the odds of those with wider swivel weapons. if a fighter takes so much damage that its losing capability, it should be dead anyways.
I'm fine with larger ships having accumulative weakness to ship areas, since the ship owner [and crew, if any] has the capability of getting out and repairing or chasing away the enemy, and have turrets to focus on denying such targetting tactics.

+1, i also suggest that shooting Ships Thrusters too much should disable the Turbo/reduce speed, Shooting head (cockpit) should interfere with controls of ships.
True lol

"Descent: FreeSpace" had this arrangement on capital ships. It might be worth investigating the mechanics of that gameplay by the devs.
It might have even had a similar mechanic on fighters, but not one used often enough for me to remember it.

"shooting the bridge destroys the pilot and leaves the capship defenseless."
Add the possibility for the pilot to set an auto-destruction timer when he's killed in the interface and send a message in sector chat that auto destruction sequence has been initiated.
