I think it'd help if there were some way to know before purchasing an add-on where it needs to fit on a ship.
I am a newish player and bought a Shield (turret?) for my Revenant not knowing it cannot be equipped. In which case I would not have bought it in the first place :)

I'll keep it in my station inventory until I have a ship which it can work on, in the meantime.

It will work on an atlas and behemoth.

The port that will be equipped if a selected item is purchased could be highlighted, so we know not only that the item is relevant, but also which of the available ports is next to be equipped.

Each addon is clearly placed under a category when you purchase it, namely Small Addons, Large Addons and other.

If it says turret, it'll only fit on a ship with a turret: Atlas, Behemoth.

Oh ok. So No shields for other ships?

Currently capital ships have shields but smaller craft do not, other than the Behemoth and Atlas which can mount a shield turret that looks like this:
