Roaming Wormhole(s)
Add wormholes that move, and that do not appear on the NavMap. They connect to random places, and never say where they are going. By "move" I mean that their locations and desitnations change at infrequent intervals that are purely the whim of the devs.
They could even (gasp) sometimes connect to sectors or systems *not* on the current navmap if the devs wanted to throw some serious wildcards at us. There could be places so bizarre and difficult that player cooperation is required to come back alive.
These places should have some sort of rewards for going there and making it back. For example, different types of drops, weapons, or different looking ships (even if they have approximately the same characteristics as ones we already have). Perhaps ships with different abilities (like not showing up well on radar, or brief charged-turbo-jump ability that lets you go crazy fast for a super short amount of time by first charging the turbo like we do charged cannons).
You could also make it so "alien" ships from these wormholes cross over into the sector in our space where the wormhole connects. VO players would have to fight their way through just to access the wormhole to alien space. Really put a fleet of capships to good use!

So a lot like the wormholes in EvE...
How do you find such wormholes? Surely can't do it as it's done in EvE. That'd require a lot of work on the devs part requiring major changes in gameplay.
IIRC such random wormholes used to exist during alpha, it'll definitely be interesting if they were implemented. Connecting them with the NPC pirates opens up a lot of possibilities. For example killing x NPC tridents sends you to a major secret pirate hideout in a hidden wormhole which needs to be found first.

I've never played Eve, so I can't compare the two games.
You would find such wormholes... by looking for them. Jumping from sector to sector and checking the radar to see if there is one about. Incredibly tedious, you say? Not when players cooperate like they should in an MMO, or when creative programming could make your ship run on autopilot and check what it finds against what is usually there. There are 30 systems in VO, so 30 players could each take one system and check every sector whenever the wormholes move.
The wormholes wouldn't *have* to always be hard to find, either. They could just as well show up somewhere players commonly pass by on occasion. Imagine dropping by Dau L-10 to do some mining and seeing a wormhole in the center of the mining field!
