Ship mass reduced according to ammo count
Ship mass should be reduced when ammo based weapons are used, according to the following formula:
Ship mass = (base ship mass + total mass of all addons and cargo) - [(empty ammo/total ammo) x (.8 x total mass of ammo based weapon)]
Or: A = (B+C)-Y
Where:
A is defined as the total ship mass
B is defined as the base ship mass
C is defined as total mass of all addons and cargo
D is defined as empty ammo slots in a single addon
E is defined as total possible ammo in a single addon
F is defined as total mass of ammo-based weapon addon
Y is defined as the sum total of ((D/E)x(.8xF)) for each ammo-based addon in use.
I chose to retain 20% of ammo-based addons mass for the launching mechanism.
Weight of players ego not taken into account.

The mass of most ammo is tiny compared to ship mass. It would have little effect in most situations.
I really like this, but why not have the mass of each ammo type counted independently? Saying launchers are always 20% the total mass of an ammo based weapon doesn't make much sense to me.
That's a good idea -- different launchers should have different masses. For instance, rails could have a heavier launcher mechanism, whereas avalons and other dumbfire, low velocity ammo-based addons should have a lighter launcher mechanism.
That get's really detailed though and I don't really feel like going through each and everyone ammo-based weapon unless it has been guaranteed for immediate implementation.
That actual ratio of launcher:ammo should be determined by gameplay consideration. I.e. maybe rails shouldn't get as much of a mass-loss relative to avalons.

+1 fully loaded rags weight alot
+2 You'd think launching 80 Chaos Missiles and 32 Geminis would reduce the mass a bit!
Of course, if we could put reloads into cargo, that would be sweet, too. We could jettison the reloads and then pick them up, only they would first go into reloading whatever ammo is low, and the rest back to cargo....
