My two cents... and three dollars.
Okay, many of these ideas may have been posted elsewhere, but this is a way of collecting my thoughts.
* Clean-up bots which pick up loose cargo, and defend themselves when attacked.
* Training sectors with obsticle corses ala X-Wing that you must get through before entering the game proper.
* Music. >_< Battle music which starts when you get shot/fire back would be nice.
* Items that modify your base ship in more ways than just "faster" or "more energy" - trade a small/large weapon slot for more cargo, cargo for more weapons, two small weapon slots for a large, etc.
* Ship designs should be inherently slower or faster - a Rag with a heavy engine should go slower than a Wraith with same. A Wraith with a heavy engine should be damn scary, actually...
* Heavies should be harder to kill - plain and simple. In a dogfight, in my experience, Heavies get ripped apart.
* Bar/mission system - starting off as a passenger transport system at first, most likely. Full 3D is not required at first, but would be nice to add later. Hell, it'd be nice to be able to walk around your ship ;)
* Keyboard-modifiers when purchasing items. It's annoying to have to keep re-typing the number of items I wish to purchase. EV has a good idea here - shift = x5, ctrl = x10, shift+ctrl = x50.
* A bunch of ideas I'm kicking myself for forgetting, but the above list will have to do for awhile. That should keep the devs busy for awhile ;)

I'm glad, Sheean, you didn't just toss all of the ideas... note that I did mention most of 'em were prolly discussed before. ;)
As far as clean-up bots go, wouldn't it be simpler to merely program the existing bots to pick up cargo when there isn't anyone around? Personally, I have seen bots patrolling right past where some poor soul lost his life-savings and do nothing. The only concern would be problems with bots running away from players in order to pick up a random piece of debris.
As far as items go, we are currently constrained by the 'slots' system. I would like to see a mass-based system that would enable a player to take a stock craft and be able to either make it a slow heavy or a weaponless gun-runner. Perhaps, with this, the mass of the flare launcher would be such that one could not put three of them on a valk with anything larger than a free/free combo. That would be fitting, no? (Yes, that was another "it should be like EV", and it has been said before, but I think that would be the simplest way to introduce more customizability to the game.

Better would be a mass/slot combo, where a ship with 10ton/100slot maxes, you can have 10 heavy things, or 100 tiny things, but no more.
