Fog/Storm Mines

Feb 01, 2018 Niki link
Mines that create a temporary field of fog or ion storm with limited radar range and visibility within a set radius.
These could be used as defensive measures and for staging blockades.

- Radius shouldn't be too big. Max. 250m per mine?

- Radar range lowered to that of an ion storm, or even lower.

- Mine lifespan like proxmines? I completely forgot how long they last.

- Mine limit per sector could stay at 100 or be lowered. Huge temporary fog fields could both be fun and annoying.

Edit: NPCs should be affected by the same radar limitations.

+100 That is an amazing idea.

+1, and possibility that fog mine summons a random colour too? Though, to mitigate people using them in capitol systems, thus confusing new pilots, npcs like station guard should attempt to destroy the mines, thus ending the effect.

Also, if ion storms are used instead of fog, then they dont trigger the exp multiplier of hive skirm missions.

would be cool if sectors could contain discreet regions of fog, which they can't. Maybe start with that suggestion, lol.

Well, the devs were working on some kind of procedural cloud generation once upon a time >.>

Sounds nifty.

I think it would be cool, but technically very difficult to pull off in a multi-player game, where the visual effects of fog from outside the fog and within need to be considered.

All current ion storm and fog effects are sector-wide. There's no "production" implementation of anything other than sector-wide fogging effects.

We do have a project related to implementing "volume fog", which has been periodically delayed by other priorities. It isn't production-ready, and there are challenges related to performance on different types of devices (PC vs mobile) and the like.

It's something we'll hopefully have at some point, which may then be a more reasonable time to re-assess this idea.
