"Otherwise you'll end up with a small elite cadre of people who can afford the best tech, and a bunch of frustrated players who feel like they can't compete."
Like the valk?
Like the valk?
Like the valk, and like the prom before it...(if you can remember when the prom was a king!)
Small cadre for the Valk? What? Valks of all colors abound.
I always envisioned the 'bomber' classes of ships being just that: bombers. A single bomber couldn't take down a frigate, but five of them could. L-Ports always seemed to yell 'LARGE ANTI-BIG SHIP WEAPON' at me, not 'LARGE ANTI-FIGHTER WEAPON'. Right now it seems that the prevelant form of combat is the solo-flare valk. Occasionally you'll see a pair. You almost NEVER see a squadron of five or six ships doing anything together. Part of that is playerbase, but much of it is that the roles for which most of these ships seem designed aren't in the game yet.
If you had frigates in the game, the Rag would suddenly have a purpose. Throw some toned down Avalons on there, and two or three Rags could take on a lone frigate. Which would encourage the frigate pilot to have a few anti-bomber escorts. Which would encourage the bombers to have a few anti-fighter escorts... and so on. By giving those other ships a target, you suddenly create a whole system of teamwork that simply doesn't exist thanks to the prevelance of the flare-valk.

Toned down avalons? Hell no, it takes enough avalons (was it 48?) to kill a frigate as it is.
somewhere around 50, yeah. never got around to counting... but 650k divided by 12k is... 54 and a third perfect direct hits.
Well even better. Now all we need is a pilotable frigate.
