Would it be overtly hard to make the comm tab or event page be able to have links open in default browser when clicked?

Depends on the platform. Behavior varies from platform to platform, some are more friendly than others. Windows it might work ok. We've recently found interesting issues like.. you can do it on Android, but if it's a set-top box or AndroidTV, then it refuses to work, etc.

Anyway, I'm not against the concept.
