Ships get disabled when damaged
Extended combat can result in ships being disabled. This will require your ship to be repaired from outside the station, or having someone manuvre a capship close to your ship so you can "dock" while they try to manuvre their ship to you.
This should open up some roleplay elements as well, and should fit well with rhe idea od conq ships, and the abandoned ships for exploring.

This has potential with large capital ships and debris expansion.
Hahaha...silly noobs.
I really have mixed feelings about this. The way you suggest it, it sounds like when you reach a critical low, your ship stops working - you are then a siting duck to be destroyed by hive or pilots. if you just sit, there isnt an rp gain here. Just fustration.
Would it not be better that on death, you have a cooldown time (actual amount both varies by ship mass and whatever you feel is adequate) where your ship is scrap, but someone who is able to repair, say, 30% of your ship during that time can make it operable again? or, during the scrap phase, the ship can be considered unrepairable if it takes 30% more damage, but npcs dont consider your scrap a target during that period?
This also leads to, what if someone abandons their scrap ship during that cooldown time? Is it still theirs? If repaired to a workable state but pilotless, can it be claimed and piloted by the salvager? can there be hive bots whose sole purpose is to find and capture scrap ships and collect them for local dynamic hives?
I guess my suggestion relies on how the scrap system will be implemented, too.

In terms of disabled, what I had in mind was, even if you won a pvp match, you would be unable to jump out of the sector to get to a station to repair there, cause the jump engines were damaged, or your turbo systems is at half capacity. Not a complete disabling of the entire ship during pvp. That kind of damage would require a repair outside the station to fix. Be it a capship, or even with repair guns. And even capships could suffer malfunctions over time, and need repairs.
People won't like it when their ship is disabled upon hitting 5% in middle of a heated pvp duel. Expect to need to buy new keyboards and monitors.

still meh, though not nearly as bad as a full disable...
