What exactly causes the lag when swarms launch? The fx or the targeting stuff? If it is just the fx, could they be made less pretty ? I mean, do a lot of stingrays cause similar lag?

After discussing this with several players from both sides of the fence....

I still think my suggested stats would be great (for me)... but I have been convinced to not overkill on the first revision, it can always be tweaked further.... my new/final suggestion is very similar to my last one, but leaves the refire delay as-is for the time being. The stats I suggest are as follows:

Up the per-missile damage to 3000 for cap-swarms
Increase the timeout to 30 seconds (optionally, but I really feel the current range from a capship is overlimitted)

That's it! As far as DPS is concerned the timeout is irrelevant. The new DPS would be:
3000*6 / 10 = 1800 damage/second

This is a a great improvement over the current 510, but still a fraction of the chaos swarm launchers, the fact cap swarms have unlimitted ammo leaves them that advantage, and if the range/timeout is increased it would also be a new/different benefit for capswarms. Also, the dps would be lower, but the damage per volley would be nearly 3 times higher (but 6.6 times slower volleys), seems like a reasonable compromise without creating any more lag then would already be present.

Beyond this, adding some form of EMP or shield-piercing-damage missile would be a much better way to address cap-ship to cap-ship combat in the longer term.

You're being told where every object is in the sector (most of them..)and its heading at all times by the server so when there are several hundred objects in space constantly changing their position (swarms) you get a shit load of packets from the server and if you are say on a crappy connection or one with high latency it can be enough to push your over the edge into object jumping lagg

And in some cases even on a good connection sub par gfx cards also choke on the increase of objects, swarms, gats and fletchette can/have cause gfx lagg

Okay, capship swarm missiles should now be doing 3000 damage per missile, with a timeout of 30.

Change should be present in production now.
