Special game setup

First the game would be set up in a high density sector permanently fogged like the ones in deneb with a lot of large and very large roids -

non registered players will not be permitted in.
The sector could in fact be separate from the regular universe.

Players would all gather and register in an empty sector.
When the preset time arrives all players would be force jumped to a random starting point at least 3k apart from any other player. Disallowed weapons and ships would not be jumped in so players in violation would be defenseless of simply not be jumped in.

Players would be returned to the initial sector once dead.

Game would terminate only when the ending condition is met and the winner(s) would then be returned to the start sector as well.

Ending conditions could be 1 player left or 1 group left.

Battle stats would be availible in the start sector perhaps or in hud for the previous battle

All this would need some form of in game interface availible perhaps thru a plug - in and a few new lua commands

Battle.setstarttime()
Battle.setsector()
Battle.setweapons()
Battle.setend()

Battle.register()
Battle.stats()

Thoughts?

Should be in the suggestions thread, but a tool for subbed pilots to host events through a command sounds good.

At this point it is more of a concept then a suggestion - It needs to be fleshed out a lot more in terms of rules and other consideration.

One important consideration would be if Guild would run it as a separate sector perhaps on a different server and if they would be willing to add the code needed to transfer upwards of 50 players at once to the sector and back. This alone would make a massive difference in how this turns out.

I would prefer a popup ad where 50 people who go to an ad page get instantly transported into the guest mode of a browser interface of the game directly to corvus station or B8. Subscribers could wait during the announced advertisement period, to blast them as they appear in B8. Like a live universe browser based ad.

Then at the end of the ad, the screen could say "You could get vengeance if you subscribe" to the Vendetta Online Universe they will be waiting for you.

How would you prevent this from being abused? Seems like a perfect tool to force-warp noobs into a violent rape scene unknowingly, if not implemented mindfully.

I'm not against people running instanced events. I've actually responded to such a Suggestion before.

I'm not sure what you mean by "a different server".. no, it would not be on a different server. But it's easy enough to run the sector on the "high intensity" cluster, or even a dedicated machine if need be. The issue of transferring whatever users to the given sector would not be a big deal.

Whether it's on the same "server" has nothing to do with whether the sector is reachable from within the universe, or anything related to that.

Anyway, I will eventually move this thread to Suggestions, which is a more appropriate location.

A difference in terminology but I get what you mean. I meant outside of the normal VO universe of systems and sectors perhaps on dedicated hardware.

I am thinking instead of a singular event this would be more on the order of a way to setup an event in game and on the fly. A permanent setting for battle royales to take place.

If the sector in question was in fact outside of the normal universe and only reachable via the interface it would remove a lot of issues from the overall design such as security and player returns.

The control set would also need to eventually allow for changing the environment. Alternatively It may be easier to provide a single system with 256 separate environments. Obviously some designs mesh better with the existing program....

Anyway I gather you would in fact consider such a setup and it wouldn't create complete havoc with your current intentions...

This is a neat idea, but I'd prefer to see something integrated to the existing Vendetta world. Player density tends to be an issue, presently, and such a "special game" could be used toward mitigating that. The Deneb conflict seems like a logical avenue to consider.

Allowing players to be transported in and death or win being the only way out does seem to preclude the normal VO mechanics, The issue I suspect is the 20 minute haul through grey needed to attend events if I understand you correctly.

I dunno, this could be a "Simulator within a simulator", basically. Accessible from Stations in general.

I don't think it needs to be firewalled off from the rest of the game entirely, it's just a separate function that people can get to from stations, and when you exit you're back where-ever you previously were.

I've been looking at doing things like that, to support high-level dueling, for years.

OMG! RAGING FUCKING BONER RIGHT NOW!!!

This is what I've always wanted VO to be in general. Trading is cool, but if I could poop in VO and go take a "group pvp" mission that was already going on....

I guess some would say that Deneb fits the bill and I wouldn't disagree, on paper. But in reality, the RP that surrounds Deneb makes the place tough to have good fair fights.

I would also suggest that this new place have friendly fire turned off because that was one way that Deneb was abused in the past if I'm not mistaken.

Or on the flip side, make everyone go into this thing anonymously. That would be fantastic. A VO combat area that is completely out of the RP bullshit.

Would it be possible to create a special system of up to 256 separate environments a1 to p-15 and create a special portal function that might create a local wormhole visible only to the player calling it? This would allow such portals to be created via the mission editor or a plugin and remain reasonably compatible with the current universe. Disabling inter- sector jumps in that system completely would need to be looked at but allowing a much larger stage of an entire system might also be of interest particularly for massive capship battles.

There would also need to be a way for players to reserve one or more sectors on a first come first served basis.

Obviously there would be no stations in the system and players would be returned to the regular Verse if they disconnect or log. A strict policy of win or die as the only means to return would need to be programmed in as well.

Fire walling the area be it a sector or system would be to ensure that there can be no cheating -

A mission based approach might be possible but I am not entirely sure how you could approach keeping tabs on 50 or more players in a singular mission without some special way to tag each player participating and creating a special routine to handle the overall status of each along with determining the winner and seeing to it that said winner would receive their prize.

A key system to the sector(s) might work assuming they were guarded like the training sectors might actually work as a setup.......

Well. Lots of things are possible. But why would doing all of that be advantageous?

It would seem that if we're going to have some kind of special area that's firewalled off from the rest of the game, with some highly limited and simplified gameplay, then it might as well be trivially accessible from within stations (as, basically a networked game simulator on stations. How meta).

That way there's an easy way for non-participant players to spectate, which I think would be a big part of the value of something like this.

The use cases I see for this kind of thing is more around dueling, group-vs-group duels, and other specialty ranked gameplay that needs to allow only a limited subset of game content, and avoid the possibility of other players "crashing" the event in some way.

At least, that's been my personal vision / goal of this kind of content; it's been on my to-do list for many years.

I don't currently see a lot of usage for big cap battles on this, I would rather keep capship battles in the actual game. The value in adding a "special instance" mode is to create limited or locked-down and simplified versions of gameplay for competitive reasons.

Kewl - And yes a way to watch would be a great feature. Perhaps a screen reachable in station.

Part of the advantage to it would be that players would be forced to all enter the sector at random locations and have to hunt each other through the fog and large asteroids.

One of the larger reasons for players not to come to some events is the sheer travel time it can take to go from Deneb to Sedina which is 40 minutes round trip. Staging events outside of the normal game would go a long way to eliminating that issue.

But I see no reason to try and convince you to do something you already want to do and it sounds like we are pretty much on the same page.
