Generally the more you try to control a troll the worse they behave - Ignoring them is in fact the only action that gets rid of them in the long run.
444 is not TGFTs "sanctioned" channel any more than channel X is the sanctioned Blargian channel. TGFT have no more right to "claim" a channel than anyone else. 444 is as valid a trade channel as any.
Perhaps we need a thread to help track what each channel has been claimed for?
BTW the troll on the help channel around midnight was reported via a support ticket. Not because of the subject matter but rather because he was spamming the help channel and creating new alts to bypass the mute.

Ecka relentlessly throws tantrums loud enough to wake up Rip Van Winkle whenever I get on 444. Apparently he didn't get THIS memo.

I know I'm a bit late to the conversation, but regarding people who don't have any kind of clarity on whether the chat filter is an option, why not offer the option to them (to remove the chat filter or not) as a pop-up once they complete Basic Training III?
It might help curb the circumvention of the filter.
Also +1 to draugath's "suggested style of chatting" in the channel number.

I perma-muted all of that individual's accounts, after the support ticket came in. We do have some solutions in the works to deal with situations like that too, but basically it's a whole bunch of different things that improve or automate different areas of administration. And getting the time to pull them all together is problematic right now.
If we actually get everything implemented.. it should be a pretty damned strong mitigation of issues, but.. that's unhelpful in the meantime.
As I've mentioned elsewhere, I'm also considering making "/vote mute" auto-escalate. So like three successful mutes results in a 24h or 1w mute, etc.
Just for the record, the suggestion made was about limiting 100 not getting rid of it.
Mitigation was exactly what I suggested. Why does the entire verse need to talk to each other?
Ore, as far as I'm concerned, limiting 100 by distance is the same thing as getting rid of it.
What's our #1 complaint from new PC players? "The game seems empty". Making the game also super quiet is a really bad idea at the current stage of things. Is it preferable to have some ass-hat spamming versus silence..? Actually, yes, it probably is. As unpleasant as that may be. It at least implies that there is someone online for an ass-hat to annoy with spam.
So, to clarify, I will not be limiting 100 by distance. We already tried that once before..
I mentioned the possibility of rate-limiting it by usage (like one message per minute, that kind of thing), but not by distance. It will continue to cross the whole galaxy, for the moment.

1/min seems a little harsh to me, I can get quite verbose at times. 1/20 sec might be enough to discourage the copy-paste spammers.
For the record, it's the copy-paste spammers that bug me. I rarely vote based on chat content itself. What annous me is a stream of drivel scrolling the real chat out of my chat pane.

Escalating /vote mute times sounds like a fantastic idea, as long as wronged/abused /mutees know they can appeal with support tickets & the abusers are recorded+punishable. & I believe both of those are true as is! So definitely +1 for escalating mute punishments combined with the new /vote system!
Also as far as universe-quietness goes, I think a big part of that problem is the large number of reasonable players who are great to group/guild/private chat with, but who have long ago /left 100 due to excessive harassment+guildspam+politics
While more power in the playerbase by way of /vote mutes is a great thing (especially if escalation is added!!), and over time could shape 100 back into a fun general chat for a bunch of spacenerds like us.... I can't help but feel like a lot of damage has already been done, and a lot of good voices have already left. I think it would take something drastic to restore faith in /100 and get a lot of those players to rejoin it
Liiiike, I don't know, some sort of policy change that said /100 was for adult*/mature* Vendetta-related chat :)

Also -1 to the idea of straight up rate limiting chat, especially to 1 a minute! Although I have to think that was an extreme example
Escalation seems like the answer here too!
You want to blast 10, 20, even 30 messages in a minute, no problem!
Buuuuuut try and do it for a 2nd or 3rd minute and you're gonna find yourself shut down
You'll get your voice back after a minute, but now you're capped to 10/min for a little bit. Go overboard again? Longer punishment, less tolerance when it's up. Onward forever!
Seems like that would stop a lot of the really nasty spammers in their tracks!
Probably wouldn't be the easiest thing to implement, but should be doable within an update cycle or two if these spammers continue to be a problem

Another possibility would be to only apply the rate-limiting to F2P accounts, while leaving Lite and Premium alone. I proposed something like that a while back. It provides a slight incentive to go Lite rather than F2P, reduces the spamming utility of disposable free accounts, and avoids imposing limits on those who actually pay to play the game.
+1 Pizzas make em pay
Yes, +1 to Rin
Just a suggestion ;) can we all troll 444 till ecka gets it? I'm sure he thinks he does have a right to this channel.
On topic though, moderation is working, you do not see it because you do not have to. Sure, there are annoying spammers, but they only are fueled by the fire you give them. This is what they want. Instead of /ignore how about you all learn about just plain old ignore? DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS.

I also mentioned that, a few pages ago.
But, it doesn't fundamentally alter a lot of the issues people encounter, which really is more dependent on better administrative tools, muting escalation, etc.

Re 444
TGFT has used 444 for a very long time.
As there are 65000 channels there is no reason for anyone to contest this.
It is no different then EMS using 911 for repair requests.
If you want to make a trade channel then select a different one and quit trying to oust TGFT.

My comment regarding 444 was regarding the "sanctioned" claim. It is the channel TGFT have claimed, sure, but there is nothing preventing others from using it as they see fit, or from GS making it an "official" trade channel.
True - The only thing preventing others from using the channel are decency and respect of others....
Rate limiting in a longer time frame is also possible as well albeit somewhat harder to implement.
Lets say you want to rate limit players to 1 message per 30 seconds as an average but still want to allow short burst. You create a bank of sorts and every few seconds add a number of characters a player can send up to their predefined maximum. Players can then freely send until they use up their allowance and then are unable to transmit for a period due to the lack of characters to send with. This would be instead of the time based method currently used.
IE:
Players are allowed to send 60 characters per minute with a bank of 600 characters.
I am not suggesting these numbers be actually used - The devs would need to determine what levels would be needed to not interfere with most normal conversations.

If only we knew what TGFT would say about THAT as a restriction on how VO is played...oh, wait:
"We will use any trick the devs allow us to get one over on the rest of you. Shove your ethics."
-TGFT Commander Ecka Estenk
Now, did I seriously hear someone bitch about "decency and respect of others"?

Your way off in left field Lecter - I dont speak for ecka and I am not in TGFT.
With 65000 channels to choose from there is no real reason to try and push anyone out of a channel.
Your issues with Ecka and TGFT are not the subject here.

This whole "y u guys h8 tgft" discussion is completely ignoring the fact that 444 is, and has always been, the sex chat channel. Why is TGFT trying to push the sex chat channel from its historic homeland?
