Disallow kill credits for players not in sector
I don't believe a player should be allowed credit or XP for any kill they aren't an active part of.
Nor should a player receive credit for mutual kills either.
Credit should only be received by the surviving player for a kill in the same sector as they are.

How do you kill somebody in another sector while not being there? The only option that pops to mind is laying mines. And if I lay mines, then I am an active part of that guy flying into them and dying... or no? Because like.... I placed them there actively, hoping that somebody flies into them and explodes.
Why does it matter to you if the player is in another sector then? A kill is a kill. You can kill somebody while not being at the same place. Imagine this: This one guy places a bomb some place, hops into his car and drives 50km away. Some other guy walks by and thinks "Aw shit" when he hears the beep beep. Thing blows up.
Do you think, when the case has been solved, the judge will say "Oh, sorry man. We cannot put that guy into jail for murder. He wasn't close when he scored the kill! Yeah he laid the bomb. But he needs to be THERE for it to be count, right?" Makes no sense? DAMN right.

Shit, I find myself agreeing with Sieger. What you're explaining actually makes no sense, PaKettle.

Why?
If I spend 20 minutes laying a lethal mine field in a storm and you jump into it and die, I should get that PK (and suffer the consequences if it violates faction laws)

-1. If Knauf kills me with his awesome mining ability, he should be rewarded for just being that awesomely awesometastical miner that he is.
Because this is a PvP game at its heart.... Why should anyone deserve credit for something they didn't personally kill? Do you believe this is any different then a miner gaining credit by sending out a bot to mine and return ore while the player sits in station?
(Luxen I do in fact have a player kill in an XC....)

BTW - The rats like to holler about traders wanting a risk free trip and so on.
It seems to me most of the griping is players not wanting to give up their risk free kills.
Are you really so determined to pad your kill sheet and hide the truth that perhaps your not the killer you want everyone to see?
These are cheap kills and all of you know it. I could have run up a record of over ten thousand kills by now If I really wanted too. What would it actually prove?
If you are really determined to keep a record of this perhaps we could make a new badge and record them. The badge Icon could be a chicken foot with a nice yellow border around it...
As far as I am concerned allowing this type of kill only cheapens the accomplishments of the players that actually deserve the title of killer.

There was once the most awesome character in VO that went under the name of "Who?Me?".
He had an automated bind to print to ch 100 that went: "I did, I died." every time he died.
Death means very little in VO - you lose a ship, your stats register 1 more death and someones stats register 1 more pk.
Removing mines from the game or not registering deaths to mines is pointless magic.
We have enough of that in VO already. Do you really need more of it?

Well, we all know that what you describe is precisely the opposite of what I am, at least, and I maintain that this suggestion is stupid. If somebody kills me with a mine, they deserve credit for it. Even if they're in the station. Even if they're in another sector. Even if they're offline.
As for mutual kills? Fuck right the hell off. A kill is a kill. If I kill somebody just before they fire a round that kills me too, they still deserve credit for that kill. Or if they catch me in their own ship's explosion, same thing: they deserve the kill. If they choose to sacrifice themselves by flaring me up close and die, they still deserve the kill. If any of that seems unfair to you, remember that their death tally also increments. It is not unfair. It is simple truth. They killed and they died, so the appropriate tallies increase. The kill tally is not a "fair fights won" tally. It is merely a kill tally.

Woah. Why the salt, PaKettle? Piracy is legitimate RP. Insulting all pirates, calling them chickens for using mines as a strategy you think is "easy, cheap and cowardly" is rather low and I didn't expect that kind of statements from you.
I'm sorry, but I think you flew once too often in a TU Niki/CS/Myself/anyone else who enjoys that fun, got mad and then went to write this thread. It's really a... non-issue.
On an RP note: I'm sure that I can speak for most pirates if I invite you to fight us and let us convince you that us playing mines is not equal to us being scared of fighting you. It's just fun. :-P
