mines should be stealth until you can get close enough to scan them
i think it is more a bug fix than a suggestion. Mines, unless they are your own or your group mates, should not appear on the radar as yellow dots by default.
They should appear as gray dots such as asteroids until you can come close enough to scan them.
The scan range should be the proximity range + a few tenth meters.
Of course for lmine they will appear as yellow on your radar once they've hit you.
Spotting mine should be a risky business such as spotting their terrestrial counterparts is.

-1. 21st century radar could see an object smaller than a microwave oven from miles away. If you want to increase proximity range I won't object.
21st century radar thought the F117 was the size of a crow.

Not until I get a cloaking device for my trident. :D

The radar will definitively detect the mine as an object. It just won't be able to tell the difference with an asteroid until you have a closer look at it.
There are no wh close to asteroid fields in current game, so you can still use your brain to figure it could be a mine.
The fun part would be to hide the mines inside the asteroid field: Then you can always choose to set a course around it.
I don't really see any justification to your -1.

+1 i like this idea. practical, makes sense
BRILLIANT
+1 due to more surprises, even if its not logical.
Cool, I'm good with trying this. It requires some client code changes, and a fair amount of regression testing, but I'll see what we can do.
I love surprise mines!
+1, sounds interesting and makes sense.
+1. I like this a lot more than simply making them invisible on the radar.
+1 as long as there is a Mine Scanner addon that increases the detection range when equipped.

As if the game needed to be more safe for you silly little carebears. Grow up, accept the inherent danger that's supposed to be there, and man up...

I think this idea is realistic and another (from my perspective) small aesthetic change that would add depth to combat and travel. I always have my peripheral tuned to any yellow blips on the radar, making most player mines virtually useless.

All I'm saying is that if we're to make mines more difficult to detect then a dedicated minesweeper role should be a valid play-style as well.

That's silly, meridian. That would make the whole "make mines less detectable" thing pointless, because then they would then become as much detectable as now.
If you want to be a minesweeper, go to Africa and help clean up the minefields left behind by tyrannical regimes.

Actually i'm ok with a large port mine sector addon. As long as it has a grid of 18 or something.
