Duplicate hung up escort ships

Aug 27, 2016 PaKettle link
Speaking of old bugs...

I had an escort today where a ship got hung up for an hour....

If you cant fix this bug perhaps its time to simply duplicate the errant ship and jump it into the next sector. Simply start a one minute timer when the player leaves the sector and when it expires make the copy. The original ship would be swapped out for the new one in the group. The original ship once freed eventually jumps and at that point it can be deleted from the system.

Most players would not even be aware that anything changed...

+1 I've had a dent stuck inside a station and wouldn't move.

+1 Stuck ships contributes nothing and is just a boring waste of time.

Don't you think this is a bit of a stupid fix? How would the server know the ships are stuck? (the ships obviously do not think they are stuck, due to the fact that they actually keep trying to fly.) Would it not be better to fix the actual AI so they don't get stuck?

Fixing the Ai is a lot easier said then done... this only requires a simple timer.

Figuring out a ship is stuck then "duplicating" it seems a lot harder. I mean, what do I know? A simple timer? Really?

You do realise that racing ahead of a convoy is what causes most ships to get stuck? SO with your "fix" I could just jett right ahead to the destination without care, and just wait for your "simple timer" to kick in and voila, mission finished...

Sadly yoda there isn't going to be a perfect solution to the problem.
In this case some compromise is needed to balance things out.

Expecting a player to sit in a sector for ten minutes waiting for a cappie to get itself straight isn't realistic any more then allowing a player to race ahead of the convoy (Which is already penalised).
I have often seen convoys where the main group of ships race ahead of the trident forcing the player to either follow the bulk of ships or wait for the trident which can actually take care of itself.

Jumping a stuck or very slow ship is a far better solution then forcing the whole convoy to wait until all the ships reach a jump area before anyone can jump (admittedly the real world solution.) Players that follow the lead ship are going to do so anyway just as players that run ahead of the convoy will do so anyway.

Keeping the npc convoy together makes the experience far more "fun" then having players either wait ridiculous lengths of time or forcing them to make a trip all the way bake to the starting sector.

As to how easy it is to do... that's Incarnates call but I do know tracking down all the corner cases and fixing them is going to tie up a lot of time that would be better spent elsewhere.

heh... Come to think of it, Since when do you ever follow a convoy past the first grey space sector? ... j/k

They seem to get hung up and the voy stretches out due to the sector going into sleep mode. Happens if a player escorts the faster not the slower voy ships. Generally the faster ships are more prone to being attacked, so it is reasonable RP to do so.

So, simple sever side test, if a player escorted voy is in sector, don't shut it down. It would only affect a few stations and wh sectors at any time and would cure the problem.

You actually do not get penalized for running ahead of the convoy. Before the newer sector timeout you could get the full reward by simply running to the destination then waiting for the convoy to catch up. You only get penalized if you do not do the full route. You still had to wait for the voy though.

Your proposed fix would mean that they magically teleport to catch me up, making the mission even easier than it already is.

A proper fix would make the convoys still travel even if a sector is asleep. It might not be the easiest fix in the world, but I'm sure it is a proper fix and something that would need doing in the long run anyway.
