A few suggestions
I will number these so you can + or - each number, I know some has been brought up before, but it newer hurts as a reminder or getting newer players views on things, if you like the basis of any of the ideas, suggest changes instead of voting it down:
1) Make grey space it's own faction: To become a resident of the grey faction you need a tri-KoS, it is however possible to regain standing in the nations without losing the grey faction achieved, to become a resident in the grey faction you will get that as an option after being tri-KoS, no automatic transition.
2) Nation manufacturing: I would love to see the possibility of manufacturing nation-specific gear (no, NOT capships, those should stay in the stations they are already appointed to), I am thinking that all the factions should have manufacturable weapons and cells unique to each nation with separate specifications but still not making one superiour to the other, e.g a Serco cannon with higher dmg than the itani cannon, but itani cannon has either higher fire rate or lower mass, and so on.
3) Make the test pilot missions worth wile for non-resident players: Let the non-resident players use the prototype ship in question for the mission, if they succeed the mission with that ship, they get to keep it, but not buy them in stations, so that if they want or need another ship they have to repeat the mission. The pilot would need to use that ship troughout the whole mission, if ships are changed, the prototype ship is not aquired.

AD-2/ This has also been suggested several times. First suggestions revolved around getting nation specific variants of existing guns just with different color shots. Further suggestions went as far as proposing manufacturing of nation-specific gear.
AD-3/ Test pilot mission exists just because Raging John at some point decided to introduce slightly squished valkyrie vengeance as a new X-1 model. In reality we should have test pilot missions for all nations top tier ships and keep them exclusive to nations they belong to (and all valks should get squished anyway).
Test pilot mission is easy to cheat with some help from your friends (as it is now) and because of that we see people who would probably never be able to pass the mission alone - flying X-1s.
Giving access to nation top tier ships to non nation pilots would effectively be cheating the faction system as it is now.

Just FYI, the test pilot mission(s) do not give you an X-1 (or whatever) until it is complete.
