Ship user skins

Jul 04, 2016 Olsbyn link
I would love to see the possibility of having user-made skins for the ships, shouldn`t be to hard really, all that is needed is for the skins to be saved to local drive, then the game would load them from there.
It would definitely bring more "color" to space.

If this is not going to happen, at least consider giving the possibility of more color combinations by dividing the ships body into more pieces so that each piece can have it`s own color choice.
The small things do matter...

You realize that a user-made ship skin, like you describe, would only be visible locally to the given user, right? No one else in the universe would be able to see your custom skin, as they would not have the data, or have it associated with your specific ship.

@incarnate: So is there a way to upload it to the server, but make it read-only(view-only)? I'm not criticizing(as I know nothing about Lua XD), but shouldn't it be easy. There are several things that are view-only...

Incarnate, you could ask Giants software and SCS software how they do it ;) ?
I used to play their games, and when playing online other players most definetly see your custom made skin.
As keshavman says, it should be possible upload it from the users client to the server, then other players would be able to see it.

But anyway, if it not possible for you I can respect that, but how about my other suggestion then, about multiple parts with color choices on the ships ?

Yes, it's possible for the devs to add a system to upload them and distribute them to the clients who need them, but at that point it stops being "easy" and starts turning into a big development process. Besides having to develop all that, there's also some tricky design work to do, since downloading textures on the fly could negatively impact performance if done wrong (e.g. if somebody with a custom skin jumps into a sector where people are fighting, they could cause a lag spike for those fighters as their client downloads the custom skin, and if one of the fighters already has that skin cached from earlier, he might be given an advantage as the other fighter stutters). There's also mobile to consider, where data may be expensive and slow, so they may need a way to opt out of it when not using wifi (and people may want to opt out anyway to avoid immersion-breaking skins). Having custom skins also means more customer support work when people inevitably start sending in support tickets about inappropriate skins.

Those are all surmountable problems, but they take it well outside of "shouldn't be too hard" territory.

Sure, more customisation would be nice, and I'm sure the Devs know this (see the new vulture liveries), but in a game with so few paid staff and volunteer moderators already have a hard time moderating the game (let alone the forums) so adding another level of moderation is bad.

No, we cannot be trusted to not put pictures of penises all over our ships, simple as.

Ah. Good point Yoda. That is very true here, but maybe the last line was not appropriate...

The Cent is phallic enough already!

I could see customization happening as a "decal" earned via a level or mission, and perhaps a few custom ones earned for a guild of a certain size. This would cut down on the loading of assets. Still, way outside of "Easy to implement".

Penises are always appropriate and to the point, so FTFY.

But no, I'm not going to get into "it" with you, for I fear your pork sword is quite short. :P

And yes whistler, I hope that is the way things are headed with the new livery system, maybe we could submit some guild livers one day or some-such! Sure, not easy to implement or even monitor, but I'm quite sure that its something guild are thinking about!

I can see some of the points here, especially the ones that mentions performance, and I agree on that and didn`t think about it until after I posted.

However, my other suggestion about dividing the ships body into several colorable pieces should be possible, and shouldn`t ruin performance, so maybe that something to consider ?

Another idea would be to expand on the livery with anything from stripe sets to faction or company-specific painting. Maybe even stripe sets for winning a said amount of PvP battles, etc.

Of course this is not something I mean have to happen right now, I am well aware that the devs have their hands full. This is simply ideas that I put forth in the appropriate forum section, the suggestions section, ideas for devs and users to think about.
Luckily there are more people posting suggestions in here, so the devs actually get a feedback on what different users would like to see in the game, then it up to the devs what they want to do about it.

We are definitely intending to expand our usage of the livery system (beyond the current.. one.. livery, and terrible UI). So I'm hoping that'll bring some customization, and yes, I also want to do things like make certain types of liveries or variants available based on particular types of character progression, which also helps visually delineate a little bit of people's play experiences.

Basically any improvement we want to do here has tradeoffs. Player-submitted content is the most complex and problematic, and involves a lot of extra data moving around. More types of color-able areas are possible, but have different tradeoffs depending on how we implemented it.

I would say, for the moment, that I'd prefer to explore what we can do with the livery system, and see how far we can get with that. If, once we fully utilize that system, there's still a strong need for more configurability, we may have other options on the table by then.. everything from fully-modularized ships (which was the original intent, shown in the old concept art), to procedural ship generation, etc.

Basically, using what we have right now is probably best, and then if/when we want to add more, there may be much better and more interesting solutions than simply color or skins.

I have a feeling if user skins were added,There would be immature folks putting naked women on their ships.
