This has to be the largest exploit in the game. The trident has four Docking Bay Hangar Assemblies, so how can those owners stick more than four XCs into a single trident? Use of this exploit is very unsportsmanlike.
So I propose that 4 bays = 4 ships. A pilot won't be able to dock with their trident if there are 4 ships docked. Add a command (/ejectbay1, /ejectbay2, etc) to facilitate clearing a bay remotely .
Also let us scan the the contents of the XCs while they are in the trident.

Technically 4 XCs would be 1200cu which is more than the Trident should hold to begin with so technically it should only be 2 XCs and 200 left over for another ship.

It's the way it is now because people whined about being able to put 4 XCs in the trident, so it was changed to be limited by cargo space. And then the pilot was granted the ability to exit the ship, so the pilot had to be allowed back in, thus the exploit was born.
Suggestion to fix it: If the pilot tries to dock with a ship that has not enough room for him/her to dock, an amount of cargo/ships are ejected to make room. There needs to be an 'are you sure?' button for the pilot, since it could be a mistake. The pilot can choose what/who to eject. If pilot chooses one of his ships inside, the ship is ejected as scrap, but the cargo, weapons, battery, are ejected separately. Cannot choose the ship pilot is arriving in.

RIP docking bay assemblies. I hardly knew ya.
Suggest that one of the docking bay storage compartment thingys is permissible by captains only.

I think there was whining for the ship count to be rolled up into the cargo count when the majority of the players playing were traders.
I think recently there have been more combative folks playing. Everyone that has given a +1 is either a pirate or nationalist.
Let me start my suggestion by saying that I don't think a trident should need more than 3 people docked inside of it at one time. Yes, I am aware that this would mean that a fourth person couldn't dock and use the open turret. You could still /gunner invite them to use it until you docked again.
Having said that, I think a logical approach would be as follows:
Give the trident 400-600cu cargo. Allow there to be 3 ships parked inside, and the pilots ship, totaling to 4 ships max inside. If the pilot wants to put his own ships in the 3 other open spots, he could do that. And then the pilot could also undock in whichever ship he wanted to out of his hangar. In this situation, any ships that were put into the cargo bay could not be used to undock the trident.
What this gives (in my opinion):
Trident pilots can still carry around the same amount of cargo, which is good for everyone, pirates and traders alike. And there would be no more nonsensical "lulz i have 1800cu in my 800cu cargo bay".
As I said, I don't think having more than 3 people in your trident is ever necessary. Cap the max number of people that can dock at 3 and ALWAYS leave the fourth open for the pilot.

On a side note...
As is, the trident can never effectively carry 800cu around unless there is someone flying with them the whole time that can dock at the regular stations.
For example, if i wanted to carry 800cu worth of FCP from Latos I-8 to Nyrius F-6 using only my trident, these are the steps that i would need to take:
1) While in a behemoth, I would need someone to meet me in Latos I-8 so that I can drop them all the FCP I need brought to Nyrius
2) I would then need to fly to either Dau L-10 or Odia M-14 (or even worse, Latos M-7) to get an empty trident
3) Next, I'd have to have that person drop me the FCP outside of the station in Latos I-8
4) They would then need to follow me to Nyrius F-6 so that I could drop them the FCP again.
5) Then, I would need to fly to Dau L-10 again (closest capship station) to put some ships in the trident to be able to undock from it.
6) I'd have to fly back to Nyrius F-6 and get the person to drop me the FCP again, so that I could have it in Nyrius.

This effectively shows that the trident DOES NOT legitimately have 800 useful cargo units. You HAVE to have a ship in the cargo to make the rest of the cargo obtainable at noncapship station sectors. You could just smash an EC in the cargo temporarily and then exchange it for a bigger ship once you get to your destination, but this still means you'd only have 675cu.
Building a trident is not an easy feat. If a person is complaining purely from the standpoint that tridents are OP, but that person hasn't built their own trident, they seriously have no room to say this. For the amount of work that needs to go into building a trident (especially for someone without a trident pilot's help), being able to carry around 1200cu once complete is 100% acceptable. I agree though, there needs to be a cleaner, less glitchy way to do it. The current implementation is obviously broken, and needs to be addressed before any new trident variants are rolled out.

Give the trident 400-600cu cargo.

No. For a very obvious reason. Right now, an empty Trident can carry 6 FCP cause 6x120=720.
If you pushed it down to 600, it could only carry 5. So let's say I dock 4 XCs instead. Oops. I'll only be able to carry 4 now. And if we push it to 400 cu? I'll only be able to carry 3 FCP at a time. No thanks.
FCP is one of the most annoying items to haul and probably the biggest reason that people ask and pay Trident Captains for hauling help. Cause they can carry 6 at a time.

Dude...read the whole thing if you're gonna make a comment. In my second post I outline exactly why the trident doesn't have an effective 800cu. As it is, its massively inconvenient to try to haul 800cu with a trident if your going to stations that don't have capship docking bays
With my set up, a trident pilot could put FCP in the cargo bay AND put some in the ships that are docked.
With my suggestion, docked ships don't count towards you cargo count. There are designated docking bays for 4 ships, one that is only dock-able by the trident pilot.
Putting the cargo count to 400-600 would be to legitimize the use of 4 XCs in the docking bays by the pilot of the trident.

How about this:
Make each docking bay = 300cu of cargo regardless of the type of ship docked. 1 docking bay always reserved for captain i.e. only 3 players can dock at a time max. Trident now has 1200cu empty. Want to dock a ship for moving the cargo on and off you have 900cu usable + that ships cargo. 2 docked ships brings the cargo down to 600 + docked ships cargo and so on. This gives the trident a slight cargo buff if you want to run it without ships and prevents the over stuffing. This is the only way to make the math of the game as it is now work correctly.
And go for bad points.......

+1 Hoban... Sounds well thought out to me, hoban, my friend.
I like that as well
My thinking is pretty simple. I think 1200cu should be the benchmark for MAX cargo load a trident pilot can manage by himself/herself.
Meaning, I don't think that the current trident's 800cu can be used effectively alone.
Your suggestion would give an avenue for trident pilots to maintain 1100cu effectively. I'm cool with that.

Either way, this bug must be addressed before new trident variants are released. So, something needs to change soon.

I would much rather the devs spend their time launching the Type S and Type P dent than messing around with something that isn't really broken.
Any move to reduce a dent's current load carrying ability will see even less of them in game as to be honest faffing around launching and re-docking XCs is already a pain without it being of more limited capacity.
