+1 to making the explosion of your Trident more meaningful if it was caused by another player.
If it was destroyed by the Hive/Deneb bots, the ramifications should not be so bad. Many captains take delight in bringing their Trident to the botting field or Deneb. If the ramifications also applied for these cases then that would discourage people from bringing the Tridents to those spcific areas. And that cannot be fixed by just adding new content, as incarnate said.
From a role playing perspective, the insurance mission could tell the player that his courage and his brave behaviour were noticed in his fight at the border/against the Hive and thus he gets a replacement cheaper.
incarnate is right with saying that he could encourage general Trident use (in greyspace, if possible!) further by adding content that makes it worth to bring out the Trident.
But Greenwall sees a problem that incarnate does not, as incarnate does not experience the current playerbase as Greenwall or I or anybody else who's been playing a while in the role of a player does.
There've been drastic changes in the playerbase over the years. Most of the good role playing has vanished and several deep sitting grudges have been developed.
So the real reason for Tridents seldomly being in grey space is not that people are afraid of losing them in general, it is because they are afraid to losing them to certain people. The same reason applies for group combat happening more and more seldomly. Player X who's not a fan of Player Y thinks "No I don't wanna fight against these guys in B8/H2/A10/I2 because I may get shot down by Player Y and that guy is an ass" .
So I say: Do it. Yes, it may discourage Trident use even more for a while, but most of the people were not going to bring it out anyway, with or without the change because of what I stated above.
This is a problem of the playerbase, not of the game itself. Only the playerbase can change this, too. I don't believe that it is going to change. The only thing to heal this would probably be a severe increase in player numbers as this would add more anonymity and would help the old players get over their grudges.
Those that are discouraged to fly their Trident in dangerous places ONLY by the change will later be couraged again when incarnate adds the cool content he mentioned. So go ahead!

good thoughts Sieger ... I will say that in the past week or two I haven't seen ANY other tridents flying about for combat purposes other than my own. Honestly VO has been pretty dead in general...
You forgot about seeing me three days ago...
I saw you, but not in combat operations.
Yeah, I don't mind Tridents being treated specially when lost in Deneb. I don't think losses to NPCs in general should be treated specially though.
