New swarm variant

Feb 18, 2016 Savet link
Reasoning:

1. Swarms are one of the few weapons useful to a cargo transport ship while it is under load or fleeing.

2. Mine persistence brings about its own problems if you are fleeing from an attacker in nation space.

3. The current forward-fire direction of swarms means they are unlikely to hit a pursuing ship if you are turboing away from your attacker, as the missiles must make a 180 turn to travel in reverse.

I propose the following:

Donkey Swarm
Identical to Chaos Swarms in every way except fire direction is directly behind the ship

The benefit here is that:

1. They are more likely to hit a pursuing vessel if you are turboing away.

2. This also gives a different, perhaps better, chance of hitting an attacking vessel if it is strafing your ship while you are stopped. Reverse fire missiles could catch hostile targets unaware as they sit in falsely perceived safety.

lol wtf -1

If Incarnate wanted reverse firing swarms he'd have made the swarm turret something that could be mounted on non-TridentCell-bearing ships.

Reverse fire missiles could catch hostile targets unaware as they sit in falsely perceived safety.

Hostile targets will position themselves according to whatever risks are posed by weapons known in the game. If reverse fired swarms (lol) became a reality, smart pirates would not position themselves directly behind a stopped ship.

Not all pirates are smart.

What about a sort of 'swarm mines', i.e. swarms that start without any velocity and that start accelerating in the direction of their target when you launch them (or after a short delay, or if their target comes within a certain distance)

All swarms should have a random chance to shoot out backwards, because the clowns that use them deserve to look like true clowns once in a while.

Otherwise 1+

+1 to more defensive weapons. When you're carrying thousands of kilograms of stuff there is no weapon that is not fair against an agile fighter.

Yes, yes! We need backwards shooting weapons!
I vote for backwards shooting gats (make targeting cone 360 degrees) and rockets - jackhammers and screamers.
After that we will need forward shooting mines, since we are very inventive and progressive here why not have rocket propelled mines that shoot forwards at 75m/s speed?
OH and yes, we need forward firing seeker mines that will magnetically attach to the hull of enemy ship and explode after audibly going 'tick-tock' for 3 sec.

The must-have Skyprom accessory!

I think the whole VO combat mechanics are flawed, we should make the combat work by ships running away from each other and firing backwards. That would be awesome!
Feb 18, 2016 TheRedSpy link
Dude the ships already work by running away from each other, the firing backward part is the new one.

+1 to people getting away even EASIER than they are already!

Also give people who are being chased an /oper kill command, please!

The weapon port positioning on moths has long been a complaint of mine and I believe I've suggested something similar long ago specific to changing the port positions on moths rear or one forward and one rear.

+1 to the OP Like mines, these would need to be used cleverly by the pilot to be effective. And the issue of ships being able to fly head on through swarms with minimal damage would need to be fixed- I assume this is still the case based on the recent comment about this ability being associated with Greyhounds.

Raise the grid on moths and make this exclusive to those ships.

@Fluffy

Moths are freaking war tanks, they have 21k armor, 2 front L-ports and 3 turrets.
If you don't know how to use their defensive capabilities, sadly, that's your problem, ask CrazySpence for a demonstration and enroll in his combat moth school.

Fair enough. I am remembering them from when I actually flew them. I had actually forgotten they have turrets now.

Come play the game with us Fluffy. It's been a while since I've seen you in game.

The moth and atlas already have backwards-shooting gats...anyone who can't jump in their own turret isn't trying to escape very hard. Add swarms and/or mines to that, and you already have a nasty ship that (as Bojan already said) can actually absorb quite a bit of damage to boot. No, it won't be sitting still and fighting, but while running away or at something it already has the ability to kill or at least distract long enough to escape.

But honestly, the OP's suggestion wouldn't change anything: swarms are not going to hit a pursuing ship going full-tilt boogie even if it's flying in a straight line...because swarms don't, by design. Sure, maybe you'll get lucky and knock 10-20% off a Hound's paper thin hull by landing one or two of the string of missiles (less in the case of an Atlas X or Hog II) but you'd have better luck and do more damage with prox mines.
