Capital Ship Warp Drive
Fighters and Capital Ships can travel within systems instantly using a FTL drive, but travelling from a system to another system without using a wormhole is currently not possible, so why don't we make an enhanced FTL drive which could allow capital ships to travel between systems without the use of wormholes? Of course it wouldn't be something everyone could use, otherwise wormholes would become obsolete, BUT we could make it very, very hard to make and use(Only for capital ships).
Item name: TPG Prototype Warp Drive
Type: Large Port

Because no.
Because no.
I wouldn't be completely opposed to the idea, but there would need to be some built in drawbacks, which appear to be missing at the moment. However, I do say no to this being something that trident's could use.
Perhaps it could only jump to sectors with jump beacons (that could be destroyed).
Perhaps it has a charge time indicated by some fun particles flowing around it that would give attackers a chance to disrupt the jump.
Perhaps, following normal jump procedure, it requires no large objects within 3km, which would allow Capital ships as large objects to create interferance.

At the very least, the drive should not be usable while the ship carries any cargo (or ships in hold).
But I still vote no regardless.

+1 great idea -- however it does need more balancing, or as Draugath calls it: "drawbacks".
"difficult to use" is a weak drawback... certainly we can be more creative... for instance:
-60% chance of success, 40% chance of blowing up
-no ability to determine exact sector (jumps to random sector in selected system)
-extensive charge / recharge time
-5% chance of permanently losing a single cargo item during jump (including docked ship)
-Deactivation of shield for 24 hours after use

As much as I detest travel in VO, this would be game breaking.
- manufacturing would become significantly easier because you could make the next station in two to three jumps max
- people already complain about the ability of tridents to escape via multiple jumps through empty sectors. Being able to jump to an system would make hunting capital ships more challenging
- since the only access to different systems is through wh's, it does not follow that there would be good data showing their spatial relationship.
- if something like this existed then the collapse of the wh to Earth would have been meaningless and there would still be communication, commerce and conflict with Earth.

I don't think humans on Earth would be alive seeing that they began to depend on the wormhole for supplies and the planet itself was dying.
Why not jump anywhere in vo universe you want?
I am all for it but with one major drawback: using wormholes shortens the journey and makes traveling faster, if you are using FTL drive it takes you 20x longer to reach destination so... if you are jumping with your FTL equipped trident from Sedina to Deneb - it should take you 5 hours in hyperspace to reach your destination.
Quite a nice addition - you could do some work around the house, take a nap or read a book while your trident is flying to destination.
Also, during this 5 hours of FTL flight you are put into hibernation so you can't talk to 100 or guild or group, if you disconnect while in hyperspace your trident explodes and you die.
There, problem solved.

Idea in the OP sucks syphilitic donkey balls, Piment. Let it go.
