(bizar) in game music idea
I think it would be cooler to have sounds based on where you are. i.e. if you are in sector 2, some native serco music is played. Deep and dark music styles.
Then if you are in 1, then itani stuff plays, stuff like advanced techno stuff.
Then the neutrals can have some variaty/blend of many different cultures musics blended together.

uhhhhhh s3 is neutral territories sector not serco, s2 is serco
uh, yea who cares. LOL that was a baad mistake. :)
Music can be great for atmosphere, but only if it's done well. Too many game developers fall into the trap of simply creating a bunch of catchy techno tracks and slapping them onto various elements of the game. I like techno, sometimes, but I don't think it makes very good mood music, since it doesn't really connect to anything besides computers. Good atmospheric music should make some link in the player's mind that characterizes the subject of the music. For example, if the Itani had as their theme a complex classical sounding piece, it would say that they have a refined, cultured society that has technical and artistic expertise. By contrast, the Neutral Territories might have bluesy or ethnic sounding background themes, that feel more personal and human. The Serco might have driving, percussive music that demonstrate the overriding aggressiveness and masculinity of their society. Of course those are just examples. Any number of musical styles could work, just as long as they make the right connections.
How`s about letting users select some background music for the ship, so when you`ve just bought your rag (including all the homers) and your flying along, people that get close to you will hear `the ride of the valkeries`, or the `imperial march` from star wars... or when you are a n00b-saver (or think you`re the man) you could have the superman theme :)
Would be nice for roleplaying, hearing some pirate music when there is some pirate nearby sure adds to the whole atmosphere...
/me goes back to his cave

Makes more sense to have sector specific music. It's an RPG, the music is supposed to put you in the mood of the game, not reflect the pilot's personal tastes.
Wouldn`t it be cool if you come closer to a cap ship you hear some triomphal music fading in?
