homing in on a chat transmission
Make chat show what system you are chatting from,
and for players in that same system, have it show what sector you are in (like system chat does),
and for players that are in the same sector, have you show up on their radar for 10 seconds.

I locked the other thread because it was from 2003, and there was some outdated information there about the "N (P) nation" et cetera. There's going to be some unwanted carryover from a 12-year-old suggestion thread. In the future, I would just make a new thread and link to the old one for reference.
Carry on.
Carry on.
Only if this is not limited to monitored channels. This should work for the use of oddball channels as well as guild chat. I would not have group chat affected for players in the same sector and system.
Also, I would suggest having this displayed using a real time indicator on the nav map.
I do not think the system chat solution is a good idea for general chat as the op seems to suggest as it would cause players to migrate to secritive channels futher isolating players in the game.
Edit: Also, it should not indicate specifically who is chatting from a given location, only that there is activity unless the sector monitored is extremely close to the player monitoring.

-1 with the OP implementation. Interesting idea, but if it showed up in chat, players just wouldn't use vo chat, they'd use their guilds teamspeak server or another alternative. Imagine how lonely the game would look after this was implemented. We'd only see the new players chatting until they learned not to, but we'd all know where faceof is. :)
But, that said, something like Fluffy's idea of moving it to the nav map and only highlighting sectors that have had a transmission in the last 5 minutes ***might*** be worth considering. But, I'm not sure why group chat would be exempt, but not guild chat. I do think even this would drive people off of vo's chat and into an alternative (like the IRC chat room).

I exempted group chat because I see it as a short range communications medium despite its universal use in the game. I would also exempt sector chat. System chat should be limited to within the system, I so seldom see it used that I'm not sure if it provides sector information or not.
I don't have a strong objection to guild chat being exempted as well, I just think it is more of a long range communication tool.

-1, what biretak said.
