Reduce the ambient light level in sectors further from stars.
With the new dynamic lighting sometimes space seems too bright. The dark side of ships and objects never seem to really get dark enough, even in sectors that are far away from the system's star(s).
As my girlfriend put it: "It used to look like you're flying around in a painting, Now it just looks like video game." :)

Here's a good example shot. The bright star there is Sedina, the planet in the background is the night side of Sedina V. That looks OK, but all the sector objects are significantly brighter.
Nitpicker!
I don't think this is high priority heh.
/me bangs the desk screaming "CONTENT, CONTENT, CONTENT!"

I'm just offering my input on the new prototype renderers while they're working on them. Don't be such a baby about it.
Picking nits again. This is supposed to be outer space, right? Why is everything so bright? This is the dark side of these asteroids!
I agree with Kierky.
ACK! That looks bad!
Most people do not notice this, but it would be a nice touch.
Maybe using TU mines too close to stars should trigger solar flares?

Actually, everybody I've shown this game to has complained about the graphics. :(
in defense look how much darker it is on the "dark side" than on the light...space in VO is not a vacuum so it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for light to behave differently than one would assume haha
I think it adds a lot to the atmosphere (hurhur) of the game for it to be darker. It makes space feel inspiring and dangerous. I would go as far as to make civilized, colonized, populous systems like capitals brighter and emptier systems darker to contribute to the mood, even if it makes little sense scientifically. The nebula backgrounds already do this a bit, but I think it'd be neat to try it actively with the ambient lighting.
Maybe what you are seeing is the reflection of the sun from an ice field behind the rocks? XD
