Bring back hidelog
I don't recall if this was present during the actual game or if it was just a Juicy alpha nugget but it let people who hated chat hide it completely and voluntarily
This would be a valuable tool for tools who hate society and wish to pretend they are playing a Single player game in combination with the already existing /ignore /leave and /mute commands

You can still hide the chat window in Options.
Options > Interface > HUD Settings > Show Chat [✓] > [ ]

A form of autism?
I took a look at this this evening. I've never wanted to be without chat so never noticed the option.
This option imo is a bit extreme. It disadvantages the player in completely eliminating the possibility of seeing private messages (hails), potentially crucial information going on in sector chat (pirate threats / demands) and for the less computer savvy, many new players won't know how to open the terminal each time they want to operate a plugin or alias that they do not have bound to a hot key.
I would propose a third option that removes the chat window from view and only brings it back to the foreground in specific situations, such as the player receiving a private message, something being said in guild or group chat, something said in the sector. This could have a timer that if nothing else is said or done within 5 seconds, the window disappears. Also, by pressing T, t, G or g (or whichever keys the player has bound to chat) the window should appear or disappear.
I can't see myself ever using the current option, I would feel too cut off from the game. And I'd just /leave 100 and 1 and think nothing of the empty chat window. I don't play VO on a tablet or phone, but something like what I've suggested might benefit those folks.
And no, I don't have a form of autism. I'm just a dumbass noob. ;)

The "chat channel" can be Private, Sector, Group, Guild, LongRange (no idea), CommNet (actual channel #s), and Help.
