Lightning Turrets
Manufactured defense item for vessels that have turret ports.
Limited capacity- 3 second discharge requiring a minimum of 10 seconds amount of time to recharge the device.
Targetable with around 50,000 health. Weight about 8,000kg.
Works automatically or on command to discharge strong electric currents to vessels within range that are regarded as hostile. Does not work through shields, rather if engaged while shields are active, does equivalent or greater damage to the shield health.
Useful for defending a vessel against an enemy that is attacking at very close range- say 200 m or less.
In automatic mode, each turret would fire for up to 3 seconds when an enemy comes within range.
In on command mode, all turrets would fire for 3 full seconds encapsulating the vessel in a 'shield' of electricity for the purpose of enabling the ship under attack to make a jump.

Yes. We should call them Lightning Mines.
Not mines unless you plan to modify them so that they hold position in relation to your ship as you travel.
My apologies...When you said "defense item" I thought you meant it would be more akin to a station turret, not one you could place on an atlas or a dent.....
.....I now see it as a far worse idea.

Aiming SHOULD be part of space combat. If you really want to hit every hostile around you, make a TU.

I should have been more clear with my op. I have since revised it to express in better detail what I had in mind.
Aiming should be 'a' part of space combat. Clearly it is not the sum of space combat given the use of missiles and traditional mines. The intent of this weapon is not to be aggressive, though I'm sure some players would find a way. It is intended to give players with vulnerable ships different tool. It would likely be fairly useless on anything besides a trident in distress.

Shoulda asked fer cloak of invulnerability.

How about a turret in a location that isn't useless for aimed weapons like neuts or gauss?
Hmm, useful in the rear turrets to stop an attacker from hiding in the blind spot.
