Actual wormholed
How about making the wormholes exist visually? Maybe have it the same way galaxy on fire has, with a big wormhole pulling you harder the closer you come to it.
Because the developers want realism. Invisible wh's are much more plausible then visible ones.
Because ships that accelerate and travel at the same speed in all directions (up, down, left, right, forward, and reverse) are TOTALLY realistic...
Some kind of weak distortion would be neat. Similar to cloaking effects in movies.

Our ships have six equally powerful sets of maneuver thrusters pointing each direction along the three cardinal axes; there is nothing unrealistic about that. And note that our ships don't accelerate at the same rate in all directions. Since they have discrete thrusters, you actually get higher accelerations along diagonals. Maximal acceleration is sqrt(3) times forward acceleration.
And of course, there is turbo, which is optimized for travel by being entirely forward-facing.
The unrealistic elements are the speed-caps and the lack of reaction mass. I try to pretend that the speed caps are a limitation imposed by whatever reactionless drive tech we're using.

Y'all misunderstood me, it's not about making it realistic, it's about having some sort of in game texture for it, not just a "stand here and press that" area.
A gentle screen-rippling effect as you move into wormhole range would be quite nice.
That's a pretty CPU-intensive effect. Let's make things interesting and make it such that the HUD cannot detect wormholes under some conditions.
(/edit - I was thinking more for the server than the player, but I'll stand corrected anyway)

Actually it should be a GPU intensive effect ;) and I don't think a little gaussian blur would be too harsh, requirement-wise. It could be totally optional
If we're going to make them actual wormholes, put worms in them!
Writhing extradimensional tendrils leaking through the rift to caress our ships as they warp?
Less tentacle p0rn for that man, stat.
Let's make cobra-holes!
um, you mean like... this?
That looks cheesier than VO's jump FX.
