Since the main way of showing a ship is badly damaged is by showing it on fire. However, in a small, non-capital ship (where supposedly compartments can be sealed off), fire should not exist in space or else the oxygen inside the cockpit will run out fairly quickly.

What should be done in place is lots of sparks. Lots. :)
