Make a more interactive tutorial

There are tons of newbs in training sectors saying they can't even pass the training missions. Make it more interactive, make the newbs actually do the things that you're explaining to them.

It's no good *hoping* that they'll read walls of text, because that is the #1 cause of logoffs/uninstalls.

Especially with the introduction of Android, there are more confused than ever.

I think the Android tutorial is actually pretty good:

edit: a new install on Mac will do this too. Haven't tried on Windows yet.

For those who haven't tried it, it opens with a sequence where you are flying through a capital ship and fighter battle, and can turn and look in any direction (without actually controlling the ship).

There is also a sequence where you must fly within range of a stationary bot causing autofire to trigger and the bot to be destroyed, and a sequence where you must fly through a series of glowing rings and dock with a station. This is all before an Android user even gets to the actual online portion. Incarnate's digitally-effected voice provides some instructions through the entire process, including the basic tutorial in the online universe.

I wouldn't take a few cases of newbs logging off because they are unwilling to read as indicative of the general reaction to the new user experience as a whole; it's not like the devs don't have the ability to track this exact type of thing, right down to flight paths and interface usage.

As far as the "walls of text", it's better to have it there for those with the patience to read. Some players may choose to skip over it or skim through (note the video I linked to is over 3 years old, and the mission is specific to the PC version; different platforms have their own versions of Training missions). However, presenting the information in this way is better than not presenting it at all; it also allows one to progress at an individual pace through the Training missions. This works better for a MMO game than locking the player in to a specific series of actions for too long.

that is the #1 cause of logoffs/uninstalls

Unless you have an inside source of information, I'd say this is a wild conjecture. I'd also be interested in what percentage of players quit after their first death or mission failure.

I play on Android and PC, different account for each and I've never had any problems with the tutorials for either. Of course I am an educated adult and not an illiterate twit like faceof and TheExiled.

Newbs will always have some issues, ninety percent of the time... they overcome these issues with ease. The other ten percent some friendly player will help them figure it out.

If a newbtard™ cannot be bothered to read the tutorials, they will not be missed when they rage quit due to their own ineptitude, ignorance and illiteracy.

If a newbtard™ isn't interested in ingesting the instructions, in-game injuries are incurred. Ineptitude, ignorance and illiteracy are the instigators. Infantile idiots are not innocent in instances of insane rage quitters.
