Custom In-Sector Location Markers

Feb 05, 2014 TheRedSpy link
An extension of sector notes, allow us to stand in any given spot in a sector and put a marker there. Markers should show up on the HUD like they do for the Capship Shipyards waypoint but have our custom description on them.

An option to toggle sector markers on and off would also be good.

This is useful in a number of scenarios, because often you want to rendezvous with a group of players somewhere, camp a bot spawn or an incoming location for a jump vector, mark an asteroid etc.. etc..

Also should include some API functions to create and destroy markers which would allow people to create plugins to share them with others.

Has been suggested before I think, but it's a good little interface feature that I imagine wouldn't take too long to implement.

+1 with the exception that it not work for the Latos trident manufacture station.

If you can target a location marker and see it's distance, and you can have more than one location marker per sector, then you can place four markers in a tetrahedral configuration, and triangulate to any point in space, allowing an exact coordinate system. At this point, you might as well just create a GPS system.

You are effectively asking for /ShowShipPos.

I have no opinion on this suggestion, other than we call it what it is.

Currently, you can have 4 or more players in a group, which if placed in the same tetrahedral formation, could also serve the same function, for as long as they remain in place. If their placement was coordinated with landmarks, such as specific asteroids, it could be reproducible.

A player could drop cargo, coordinated with local landmarks, which could also serve the same function.

A tetrahedral formation is not required, other formations could be used. A minimum of 4 reference points, not sharing a common plane is required for a full triangulated coordinate system reference.

I think we should be able to leave notes on existing sector objects like asteroids, but arbitrary points in space should require a physical beacon of sorts.

What this suggestion is basically asking for is the old /displayshippos with a convenient UI. Beyond the obvious innocuous uses of this feature like marking paths to asteroids, it would also make things like permanently marking the jump-in points from various stations trivial.

With the requested API, a player can write a plugin that automatically jumps from sector to sector, plotting out every jump-in point in a matter of minutes. Once that's done, all you have to do is park there for an ambush.

Sure you can do that now, but it can't be stored. The point in space has to be marked with a piece of cargo or a mine field. Nothing permanent.

Nah its not /displayshippos because there's no need to actually give the distance to the requested target, just to have it turn green when you are within 100m or so of it.

I'm not even against /displayshippos being turned back on, I would make good use of it, but this is not it. It's for marking points in space so you dont have to do it with asteroids and try and communicate your point to your friends.

Remind me again why displayshippos was so bad? Player-made bots can't have gotten that bad due to it.

If the original DisplayShipPos was restored, it would make automated trident manufacture a bit too easy, IMO.

I would MUCH prefer the DisplaysHippos functionality be restored, so that we don't have to use plugins to simulate it.

As for the OP, +1.

Roda: That would be trilateration, not triangulation (the former uses distances, the latter uses angles).

The way to implement this without allowing for the return of /displayshippos is to allow the group leader to designate a single marker that is viewable by all group members. This facilitates easily setting up a group rendezvous point without having to resort to using custom plugins.

The key here is that only one group marker point could be set at a time so it doesn't allow for triangulation or auto-navigation bots. And if the group disbands, the marker would disappear too.

In addition to the group leader being able to place a marker at their current location, it would also be handy if they could alternately place the marker at the destination sector of their currently plotted navroute (at the center of the sector or something?). Then have an icon mark the sector on the nav map, and perhaps even display the sector in the group list. This would make it easy for group members to plot the same course entered in by the group leader.
