HUD display change and navigation
Here's another idea... don't worry I'm sure I'll run out of them sometime or another.
Both ideas connect, so I thought I'd stick them together, and if either idea takes off, a new thread might be appropriate. First, is some form of mapped navigation. This would be easiest done on a 2 dimensional grid, with elevation of objects off the plane in neat little brackets, and showing up on the radar to give the rest of the info we'd need to set a course.
The navigation is an under-developed idea in my brain, but is tied closer to a modification in the HUD display. For physics mode, rather than have the throttle bar as we do now, I'd like to see some form of speedometer, telling the pilot their speed in each direction on the navigation plane.
The two ways I see of displaying the speed are both dependant on a bar with a zero in the middle, and a slider showing relative speed along each axis. Now this could either be relative to the navigational plane with a fixed set of axis, or the ship's set of changing axis.
This could aid people in learning the physics mode, and might just look cool. If this is just a plain bad idea, that's what I get for writing after a long day. I know how I want it to look in my brain, but without spending time with The GIMP, I can't show yall too well.

I like the idea. Seems like it would be pretty easy to implement too. You could have a meter for absolute speed in the front like we do now and 3 bars for each axis. One on the left side (y-axis), one on the right (z-axis), and one on bottom (x-axis) to display the relative percentage of your velocity in each direction.
it sounds nice. it would also make the implementation of waypoints/beacons easier, as you could simply set one in the map. it'd take a little fine-tuning to find out how it'd work best.
yay! an idea of mine that actually might work :-) I did spark a nice discussion in last thread I started, but I quickly found myself in an area of science that I'm weak in. <shrugs> oh well.
Magus, your description is pretty close to what I had in mind. To conserve screen real estate, the display could come up only when in physics mode. This would also help people like me out. I can't remember what mode I was in when I left the game last time, so having this display would tell me whch mode I was in right away.
Toshiro, I hadn't thought about that aspect of it. Good idea.
