Here are the facts for dents (as they are as of today):

* They cost 500k to replace.

* That's fuck all.

Not everyone will give up a weapon port for the ability to tag people, and those who do will have to PvP with one port occupied with a tag gun.

Yes, that's what makes it a tradeoff. Same as the Power Cell Blaster, Storm Radar, Cargo Scanner, etc.

* They cost 500k to replace. \n* That's fuck all.

Plus the loss of expensive/crafted addons, and now a few ships with expensive addons. Really though, the worst part about losing a Trident is the shitty trip to/from that stinking station 30km out in the fog in Latos.

I've always wanted it so it takes some time to get your trident back, like maybe a couple days +10 million credits. 500k credits isn't really much

A couple of issues I have with this...
1) Broadcast range needs to be defined. I think it should be limited to same system myself as it doesn't make sense that a tagged ship in Edras should be reported in Odia or Sedina.
2) For the intended purpose the ammo count seems ridiculously high.

I can see applications for this beyond the OP's desire to track ships through empty sectors.

I certainly like this idea, but based on the opinions here reserve a +1 until such times as Tridents become defensible. Particularly after watching ITAN's slaughter of a BR1 trident on Youtube. That was just sad. Like watching sharks in a feeding frenzy on a whale. To be honest, I wasn't sure I wasn't watching the nature channel. And oddly enough, not once did it appear that the Br1 trident was able to enter a sector more than 1000 m from it's pursuers over the course of several jumps.

"You wouldn't believe, but lots of players are on mobile devices 90%+ of the time"

So what? Do you try to play hockey without skates, and then bitch when you can't keep up? If you dislike not using a real computer, switch to using a real computer. Don't ask for the rest of the game to be held back just because you insist on playing via toys.

I envision this using the group functionality unless the Devs can do something less kludgy quickly, and that reports position regardless of where you are. Broadcast range has never been an issue in VO.

Come on Pizza, everyone knows that there would be no money, no VO without the mobile port. If I'm holding VO back, then you are pushing it over the edge.
Jan 30, 2014 Pizzasgood link
No. There is a difference between permitting an inferior platform to play, and limiting the game to make things "fair" for the people who use that inferior platform. VO can be played with keyboard-only, but it doesn't limit mouse/joystick precision for the sake of keeping things fair for the poor keyboard-only people.

"Mobile users have a harder time with combat" is not a valid point in this discussion, nor the majority of discussions. The only time that is ever a valid point is when discussing things like billing options, lite-vs-premium, etc.

Brilliant idea.

suggested additions:

A beacon should have a limited life span. The life span should be measured in terms of the taggers and target's joint time online, so that the life span only degrades when both are online.

A target may have any number of beacons tracking them, but a player may only track one beacon at a time. Tagging a new target voids any previous beacon.

If you are not in the same system as the beacon, the beacon only reports the system. If/when you are in the same system as the beacon, the beacon reports the system and sector. If/when you are in the same sector as the beacon, the beacon shows on your radar, and can be targeted, regardless of distance, ion storms, and/or fog.

Due to technical details, beacons may not operate correctly on targets employing a Cargo Spoofer.

Ok, I will argue again with a trident-centric manner.

A trident is not a 'dragon', it is a 'whale'. It can endure much, but its offense is a joke and it dies quickly under right circumstances. I will consider the idea only if/when a balancing bone is thrown to a dent owner.

Exiting and repairing with an agile pursuer on your six is not an option with the current dynamics, rep ship will be killed instantly and captain will be teleported to many wh away, then what?

And having infinite range even in storm? Really? Any more overpowering ideas? And only defense against it being a small port addon which dents can't equip, neither moths, except for miner moth mk1?

NO transponder

I like the idea of a cargo spoofer being able to limit or otherwise disrupt the range. Jashen's ranting is too stupid to require a response.

A Transponder Railgun would inevitably become the number one weapon of pirates and other "noble"' trades that profess a need to "work" for their in-game living. The slower-moving cargo vessels, noobs in e-series ships, and ships damaged by ambush are already at a disadvantage. Hiding, for them, is the only chance they have to survive. Tracking systems are, without question, predatory tools for the weak, insecure, and the lazy. That is unless you are doing an in-game research project, in which case adding tranquilizer darts to the Transponders, and using them solely on willing subjects that also carry transponder railguns, might be an interesting turn of plot. Making these type of predatory weapons expensive, merely shifts the power to the players that need it the least. Maybe a more fair version, would be to add a transponder to all craft that transmits the location of any craft, group of crafts, or guild, upon an attack of players meeting certain criteria> such any unarmed vessel carrying no weapons or ships as cargo, or non PVP training missions, and noobs with less than six months in the game and combat licenses less than 8. Transmit the trackers location and jumps on 100 and see how that flies. VO is a game with many layers and hundreds, if not thousands, of pages of information to absorb. New players are at a huge disadvantage, given the heavy learning curve and inability to defend themselves effectively. This is not inherently a bad thing, it is what it is, but giving a tracking device to the VO foodies that have a taste for eating their young is ludicrous at best. Oh and word to the pirates, maybe instead of killing noobs, it might behoove you to sweet talk them onto your team with your expert and infallible diplomatic relation skills. Just my 2c.

What are you babbling about? This isn't about newbs at all. Newbs are newbs; you just kill them. It's easy. A newb in a bus who lets a pirate get close enough that the pirate could have tagged him with this weapon is already dead; hiding does not factor into it. The only hiding newbs do is hiding before they encounter a pirate, and this transponder railgun makes no difference for that.

This weapon is about hunting large ships and about tracking people who are up to something (e.g. weapon transfers, secret events, etc.). The prey in both situations are vets, not newbs. Newbs don't have tridents, and newbs don't do anything worth tracking them over rather than just killing them outright.

bump

A transponder with limited scope would be very helpful and worth losing a weapons port. A capable team of 5 itani tracked BigNasty78 around Latos today and he was able to easily slip away multiple times. PCBs were used to little effect due to Espionage managing to bump off PCB shooters just enough to allow BigNasty78 to jump away. At which point it just takes about 3 jumps before he is out of range to detect his next destination.

A transponder that lasts even a *maximum* of 5 minutes would allow a greater chance at detaining a trident with a PCB....

I think this idea should be seriously considered.
Feb 22, 2014 Shadowhawke link
Sorry Greenwall, I still have to disagree with this idea. I was also part of that action today and one of those PCB shooters that got popped a few times trying to get at BNs dent. The chase and the search are part of what I find fun about these. I've been to one of those "Hunting Clubs" where the anamils are tagged and so used to humans taking care of them that they almost stick the rifle barrels in their own mouths. (just sickening and boring). If Rats or anyone are going to hunt. Then learn to hunt and leave your tracking darts at home. I'd much rather hunt lions, than pet animals any day.
Feb 22, 2014 Pizzasgood link
Your analogy would work, if hunters in real life didn't get to look for prints and disturbed brush, and wounded game could magically teleport into one of over two hundred fields leaving no blood trail or any other indication of which one they went to unless you're right on top of them, and the animal could then have its helpful fairy-squirrel-buddy crawl out of its butt to perform surgery and make it as though the injury never happened.
