Sniping in VO?

Dec 27, 2013 Growlor link
The game that I've been mostly playing lately is entirely PvP based and I often think "why am I playing this instead of VO? Is it just the newness or is something fundamentally missing in/different from VO that I think adding to VO would really help?"
The one that really stands out is the ability for even a low level guy to have a shot at killing a highly experienced player if he is patient and a little bit lucky and plays his cards right (hearing a huge cannon shoot and then seeing your enemy die is just immensely pleasing - sort of like how even terrible golf players say that one good shot makes it all worth while.)
Having said that, I don't really know HOW to do it. There would have to be some way to remain undetectable without unbalancing everything else and then have a powerful enough weapon to seriously cripple a fighter class ship that is fast enough to be nearly unavoidable if you catch someone boosting in a straight line. It might have to be non-functional near wormholes so people would have some chance of escaping (or maybe that would encourage convoying?) It also might be fun to taunt someone into chasing you into an ambush too.
I'm sure sniping has been requested about a zillion times before, but don't recall seeing it recently, so if someone can update me on the current dev thoughts, please do.

We've got persistent mines now. With a little luck and some careful placement you can score PKs without even being in the sector.

As much as I like the idea of fairness towards newbies by sniping possibilities in a combat game, I must say it does not seem to fit into VO. Atleast not to me. What I've always liked about Vendetta was the experience based combat which somewhat seems to be a reward to players who dedicate theirself to PvP: When you're a newbie, it is natural to explode quite a lot of times until you get the hang of PvP. As time goes by, you develop your techniques and find out what setup and ship might suit you best, or what general fighter class you're good in. The charme of this system would be completely erased by adding things such as sniping: Basically, anybody could shoot anyone; there wouldn't be "PvP idols" anymore and VO combat would become like combat in any other game. I wouldn't enjoy this, to be honest.

@Growlor:

The problem with your suggestion, is that it is not specific enough. When I hear of sniping, I tend to agree with TRS. quad rail hornet can be a one shot kill. but it is not really a low level loadout.

So what are you calling low level? you don't need very many levels to start "noob tubing" players with chaos swarms. how low level are we talking.

if you pick your targets, moth xc are sitting ducks. a level one character with a centurion and a plasma hx has a decent shot. the main limitation here is the power cell.

I use level 3 equipment to kill proms. but i would not call it sniping. the proms shoot back. it is a long drawn out battle. i am a highly experienced vet, and i do not always win.

a prom or a light fighter would have to do something really stupid for a noob to pop out and blast him and call it good.

perhaps Pizzasgood has the right idea. sit next to a roid with twin avalons, and when a vet comes to get you, fire at the asteroid and see how fast he can backpedal. other than chaos swarms and lightning mines, that is about the best i got for you.

edit: ok, one time i log into b8, with my typical level 3 gear, and there is ancient_whatever in valk, and spidey in a rev-c, both sitting there. i am not going to kill spidey 1v1 in a fair fight any day of the week, but what the hell, i don't have anything to lose, so i run up and blast him. he is afk, and he dies (and cries). does that count as sniping?

Sniping

(It took my entire VO career to get footage of landing a shot like that :-) another good one here)

The same type of thing can sometimes be done with rockets (I know the target is mostly sitting still in this footage; I swear I once landed a rocket shot on a target over 1k distance, in motion and retreating, I just can't prove it: it's a fish story)

It looks like you are suggesting a couple new gameplay mechanics (stealth, disabling systems) along with a new weapon class, designed specifically to utilize these. I think there are both benefits and drawbacks to systems like this, depending on how they are implemented.

I'm also under the impression Inc implemented the groundwork for different types of damage to allow for more interesting weapon and armor interactions. We've also seen our first weapon that drains energy from the target recently added.
