Shield Generator Addons
the title says all , or missions /manufacturing or new devs addons in game suppose
Capship shields have been considered. This thread is irrelevant.
not for capships, for normal ships i talk
they wont happen anyway until they build the code for player ships to have shields.
The shields could have a spherical shape.
Take your shields in pill form!
I had the XC in mind...
A XC with shields? Lol, hell no.
An Xc has no add-on port. If small ship shield generators were ever as suggested here, XC's would still be deliciously vulnerable.
Say we tried a large port version first:
mass: 5000 kg
grid usage: 12
recharge rate: 500 per sec
max shield: 2000
recharge energy: 20 per second
turbo drain penalty: 5
Would that gimp it enough to try it? Sacrifices offensive capabilities and grid power, is heavy, weak, sucks your battery when you get hit, and sacrifices infini-turbo. This actually sounds too gimped and it would be far more a liability, but you get the picture.
Maybe:
mass: 5000 kg
grid usage: 12
recharge rate: 20 per sec
max shield: 2000
recharge energy: 20 per second
turbo drain penalty: 0
This way it is little more than an extra 2000 points of armor at the cost of weight, uses 1-to-1 energy to recharge, can't be stacked, and severely limits offensive options.

We already have a better solution than shields
Tis called "PAY"
Tis called "PAY"
And so the SPORE spoke, and He said: "Let thy wallet be thy shield."
Is that from the Pible? 1st Corvussians Chapter 3 verse 2?
We don't really have a large selection of ships and ship-types, but there are roughly three classes of ships in the game. To be a abstract, I'm going to call these Class-A, Class-B, and Class-C. I place all player-flyable ships (except the Trident) in Class-C. Tridents are Class-B, and Heavy Assault Cruisers and Constellations are Class-A.
It is my opinion that all Class-C ships are too small to house a ship shield capable of shielding the entire ship like NPC capital ships are. Class-A and Class-B ships therefore are the only ones that should be able to equip a full shield, let alone come with them as standard equipment.
I'd like to see the game reach a point where each class of ships has more choices within it, but I don't think that allowing Class-C ships to have full shields is the proper thing to do.

the point of shields (as used in every other space game ever made) is not to give you an advantage or make it harder to kill you it is just a small buffer so you dont have to dock and repair every time a bot or a newb scratches your paint
+1 to weak shields
+1 to weak shields
I've never liked the idea of weak shields. They're gimmicky and often only serve to make you more durable than you probably should be, and would likely only increase the chance of people running around rather than fighting. "Ouch, I got hit and my shields are almost gone. Time to run around while they recharge."
Leaving shields to Class-A and Class-B ships means dogfighting doesn't become a boring exercise in shield management. It also serves to bring about the need for coordinated efforts between multiple players to bring down the larger ships that do have them. Even with collision damage as it was before, scratching the side of a docking bay was never a big problem.

I dunno, I loved all the X-Wing games' shield management. "Switching shields to double-front!"
But, VO is not balanced for small ship shields, just as it is not yet balanced for player capital ships, so I won't defend the idea, I was just tossing out specific stats to a generalized suggestion.
(@wolfman, if you are going to make an add-on suggestion, it is always best to give example stats as best you can imagine them, so people can disagree with you more specifically)

Drevent1, +1
Shields with the shape of a sphere, or a pill, would hold the disadvantage of being easier to hit.
Maybe even options for bigger and stronger shields, or smaller and weaker ones.
And only capitals would have shields with the same shape of the hull.

-1 to "Class C" ships getting shields. Hell, I'm not convinced TTM's need "real" shields either, just something to hold off a bot or 3 in a hive sector, but that's a whole 'nuther subject.
I want a valk with a shield please :)
