Allow mentors to initiate mentor request

Sep 02, 2013 Savet link
Problem: New players fail to seek out a mentor until they are well past the level requirement. As a result, the UC powercell is unavailable to all but a small group of players, which restricts the market and prevents new players from receiving proper mentoring from a wider variety of players.

Suggestion: Allow the mentor to invite a player to be mentored. Limit request to once per login per member to prevent mentor invite spam.

This isn't the issue really. It's about what levels the mentoring system becomes unavailable.

Yes it is the central issue. New players dont know about the mentoring system until its too late, but if the mentoring system popped up with a

*** Savet Hegar is proposing to mentor you on the basics of the game, type /mentor accept "Savet Hegar" to accept this invitation

It would make so much more sense than the mentee having to learn about the obscurely documented mentor system.

It shouldnt be limited to once per login. New players getting used to the system might miss the message. If it is limited make the limit 3 times that way you can resend it if the newbie didnt see it before.

I still keep meaning to make a small "Find a Mentor!" mission set.

The problem with having the mentor initiate an invite to a single person is that the two players still have to cross paths in the first place, and the person being offered to be mentored may not even want to be mentored. In such a case it would be annoying to be receiving mentor invites every time one crosses paths with a vet.

The better way to do it would be to have some sort of bulletin board system where people can post their desire to mentor, then the newbies can peruse the board to find someone who is currently online and nearby.

The downside to that is potential mentors would be revealing their online status and potentially even proximity to a given system, but it's not like signing up to be a mentor would be mandatory.

Most newbs are still wrestling with basic commands - requiring them to use an obscure one right off the bat is a bit nuts. Far better would be to have mentors send a request and create a popup so the newb can simply click yes or no.

Popups are the Devil's Work. Begone from here with thy foul blasphemy!

(Seriously though, I agree in principle, but do it via some means that doesn't involve throwing a random view-blocking and possibly control-disruptive popup in some newb's face. A location in the PDA maybe. If the mentor can't guide them through the PDA to reach it, he's a sucky mentor who doesn't deserve points anyway.)

If you suck at mentoring so bad that you can not explain to a noob how to invite a mentor, then you should not be mentoring anyone.

It need not be a "pop-up", just sent it like a group invite, via chat/PM

This is one of the smartest UI suggestions VO has seen in a long time. That it is necessary at all is pretty sad, though.
