Put my name on there too. :-)
rogue: The ion blaster is pretty much 'useless' on a small ship too, but it is what it is. A cheap 'n00b' weapon. The regular gatling is fairly useless against a skilled well-armed foe, but it works just fine against bots even if mounted on a Ragnarok. Besides which, the Warthog can mount one and its relatively high agility. People just don't because better weapons are available to them - just like there are better weapons than the ion blaster.
In fact, it is potentially an interesting weapon since _because it doesn't have autoaim_ it can by spraying an area hit (occassionally) a target that is doing some 'dumb' reflexive evasion - like barrel rolling - rather than dodging responsively. We need more weapons like that, and that part of the reason I see no need to move the weapon. I'm assuming that it is not difficult to create more weapons, and precisely because it isn't difficult the devs are concentrating on more important but less visible things.

no
like celebrim stated.
I dont consider an advanced gatling to be easy to get in the near future, as a gauss.
In my opinion they will rise exponantionally in price.
So equipping one, could be a good call, but if you lose it it could be possible that you need to play 30 minutes just to assemble the money to get one.
Dont forget the game is moving into the rpg stages and "special" weapons arent easilly obtainable.
cheers

ay toshi,
but buying a hog withouthaving the money to slap on a weapon on the big port, even if that big port weapon costed only 100 c in stead of the 6000 it costs now could prove usefull for a newbie.
i was just, as a playteam you gradually enhance your equipment, you dont jump at once from a sword + 1 to a sword + 5 so to speak. You do it gradually, by earnign money, getting parts of it and letting it assemble at some local smithy. you know :D
imagine that you needed to do that to be able to buy a gauss :D
or an advanced gatling, it would completely alter the game/test and people would start complaining that their isnt a cheap large port energy weapon.
cheers

A small gatling would be nice, but say 10 energy/shot?
Celebrim, this whole cost thing isn't like you. Isn't it you that said to me that you'd rather not be limiting weapons by cost when it was suggested to make some weapon astronomically expensive?
cost is not a good way to balance a weapon, that doesn't mean that it isn't a factor in buying one. once again the fact that the nice devs have made money very easy to come by in the test doesn't mean that it will be as accessible in the finished game. the difference between 1000 and 10000 credits might be huge.
hence the need for an ineffective but relatively inexpensive large port weapon is something to be considered.
I'm with celebrim on this one. make something similar to the basic gatling for a small port, (call it a mini-gatling?) and make it an EXPENSIVE small port weapon. (I shudder at the thought of a twin gat vulture point blank)
And let the devs worry about it later.. .lets get that dynamic economy!!

hmm why is my name not on your list rog?
/me signs his name again
/me signs his name again
YES!! As long as it's only effective with just one. (I don't particuarly fancy seeing tri-gatling valks or duel gatling vultures)
"cost is not a good way to balance a weapon,"
-Agreed, if cost was such a significant indicator of balance, the Ragnarok and Centaur should butcher all the other non-specials. But they don't and they shouldn't.

magus,
the rag or centaur or not needed to butcher those ships, they are needed to butcher the frigate :D or each other.
And the frigate is needed to butcher the fighters and so all in all its a perfect harmony :D

/me starts singing: "The Circle fo Life"
Put my name on the list. The gatling is pretty useless as a large port weapon.
