Trident Ports
Trident has one large port. Much smaller ships have many more. I would suggest giving it one more than the heavy miner's 3L. I suggest 4L.
No. Capital ships are not meant to be gunboats with massive amounts of armor. Their fire power comes from their turrets, of which the selection is rather limited.
Turrets are what's wrong with the picture.
Start by making the turret and fixed weaponry used by NPC tridents available to player tridents. That 1 large port should be a new capital class type port.
It's about options.
Most ships give the pilot two or more ports to use, can be the same item or two different ones, player's choice.
A trident has one large port. It can hold one thing. There is only one place in the universe there that one thing can be swapped out for something else.
It's not like it would be practical to have 4 AGTs and become just a large uber fighter. That won't work. Battery limitations still apply, maneuverability hasn't magically improved.
With one port I can put in one TU mine launcher. This would mean after taking out one, ONE prom we have to go back to latos to reload.
I can put in one mining beam.

Are you Wild Gramps or something? By the look of it you've just finished a Trident and discovered they are indeed fairly useless for just about everything you wanted to use them for.

The lack of stations isn't a valid complaint in this context. The devs fully intend to add more whenever they get around to finishing the capital station art assets.
@Pizzasgood: Point taken regarding the stations, but the other point about a lack of options I think still applies. I am not convinced having more large ports will make a trident overpowered, and I believe having them will be useful.

I agree that tridents need diversity and powering up, but giving it more then two forward turrets is not the way to do it.

So? It's only a trident. It's not supposed to be perfect.

Better solution: Have a pilot piloting the trident, and reposition ship in reply to attackers.
Next, Tridents are a different class of ships, why use same weapons/ports/grid/power cell as small ships? That's like equip 120mm cannons on warships, since those are the largest used on tanks today. And use same engine from M1 Abrahams MBT on warships to generate power...

+2 to Capital Port weapons
+3 to decent capital turrets
Capital weapons and turrets can have a minimum grid of 30, so a reactor is required, and weight a crapton!

I think this is worth revisiting in light of the new energy reducing blaster.
