Mentor System Redux
I know this has been brought up before, but we have many new players now that (like me) are too lazy to search through old threads, so I thought I'd start a new one.
The mentor system as it currently stands is next to useless.
I've mentored and helped countless newbies, yet I don't think I have a single mentor point (NFI where to look for them, either). 5 good reviews for a small discount at "your nations" stations? What use is this, given the actual value of credits? 40 for UC's? Not gonna happen any time soon.
Should I simply do as others have done, and grind alts up on a separate account? No thanks.
My thoughts...
Well, for a start, the fact that the newb has to do the inviting is pretty backwards. Why can I not invite someone to be my "protege"? The current method feels like you're saying "I'll help, but only if there's something in it for me".
Ditch the pointless discount at 5 mentor points. Offer something else, sure, but it should be something players actually give a crap about. Hell, the first 5 points could simply grant a badge to show a prospective newb that you have taught others, and can teach them something!
It needs to be easy on the newb, (preferably no more than a "Accept/Decline" option, and a "Good" or "Bad" button-click somewhere for the review itself), but more importantly, it needs to be reasonably achievable for the mentor.
I realize I've not actually offered a solution... cos I don't have one right now. I was hoping others would have some good ideas here.
Faille.

the solution is to make UCs a craftable item at conquerable stations
My interim solution is a simple value tweak for the license cap so you at least can find your newbie before the time that you can mentor them expires. I remember mentoring you myself Faille and by the time we'd actually met to do combat and such you were already well above the 3/3/3.
peytros, that is not a solution to the mentor system borkage, that's a way to ignore it completely. This thread was not about UC's. I couldn't care less about UC's, to be honest. I rarely use them. It's the badge I want to be able to get. If goodies come with it, that's gravy.
TRS: This is probably the biggest problem in my book, and has happened to me many times too. Also, you can't mentor LITE subs at all, as they can never get to combat 4 to review you.
The mentor system as it stands is too damn restrictive currently. The only folks that I know, that have the 40 review badge got it by mentoring their own alts (I'm sure there are some players who got it "properly" but I don't know of any). Any system that requires (or "almost" requires) using an exploit to get the end result is simply borked.
My suggestion is allow a player with high-ish licenses (above say Combat 5) to mentor any player up to say, Combat 5. A player can still have only one mentor, ever. Allow the newb to review the mentor whenever the hell they feel like it, not just once they hit Combat 4.
Also, switch "/mentor invite "mentor name" to "/student invite "newb name". Put the onus of making it "official" on the mentor, rather than the newb.
Also, a list of the players you have mentored would be nice, to show what kind of results/players your mentoring has produced...
