Mines that slowly seek their target. What do you guys think?
I want ponies in space.
They're called Stingrays. Next.
If they were mines, they'd wait still in space slowly seek any nearby targets who come within range. What you're describing already exists in missiles.
Missiles don't eject out the ship's stern. Stingrays can't hit anything and don't have proximity fuses.
You think mines eject out the ship's stern? Try laying a pair out of a stationary moth sometime, and see where they land.

Nonsense. the only real way to test this is get a behemoth, put mines on one port, swarms on the other, make sure they are both on the same trigger. Load up on Sedina Chocolates and turbo. At any point during turbo press the trigger.

Um, and you think that even more slowly moving mines will be more effective? Okay, so you could give them prox fuses, but so what? Gems hardly do any better than Stingrays.
As for Kierky, here you go:

The whole point is that these mines would be more effective then regular mines because they move towards their target. They aren't supposed to be used as missiles.
Regular mines are extremely effective except they have risk, require skill and the best case scenario is that you escape. They aren't so hot for holding objectives or blockade which is where seeker mines might actually work.
It isn't worthwhile until we get persistence and proper Iff though.

But yeah, seeker mines would be cool if it was possible to make mine fields around objectives or strategic points. What I was talking about earlier is that missiles only go after one target, the one you had locked when you fired them (usually...) Mines would go after any valid target in range...?

Yeah, any hostile target. It would be fun to drop it in the middle of a skirmish and watch it hit somebody.
And who, pray tell, will it hit? What's the logic behind target selection and guidance? Once it's selected a target and started tracking, what happens if the target occludes/warps out/goes boom? If the target simply turbos off, will it ignore other potential targets right near by or haplessly chase the original target like some bus-driving FAMY noob?
If you want to try this, just get an L mine and drop it in the center of a furball.

I suppose if the target leaves the proximity range it'll stop or track another target.
Wouldn't it explode if the target was in the proximity range? Missiles are easy because they only track what you've targeted when you fire them (that whole 'extra swarms will acquire a new target' thing has never, ever worked). This is really complex and you obviously have given the issue little to no thought.
We can't even get Inc to stop playing mobile mommy long enough to do simple value tweaks. WTF makes you think this is even remotely a good idea?

"We can't even get Inc to stop playing mobile mommy long enough to do simple value tweaks." Using that logic, we shouldn't even make suggestions at all, you twit.
And I mean, it would stop/track something else if it left the tracking range. It wouldn't follow them across the whole sector.
"WTF makes you think this is even remotely a good idea?"
The fact both ARF/TRS agree with it?

I think you mean disagree with it, which is normally a good point. But until you put some thought into it and set out details (oh, gee, it would stop/track something else? when? who? under what circumstances, genius?), it's a pathetic excuse for a suggestion.
If you select a target and fire, we shall name it "Slug Missile".
If tracks nearest (hostile) target, then it's simply another excuse for a proxy fuse.

Lecter, the idea isn't really that difficult to comprehend - mines that track their target. The smaller stuff isn't that important.

I haven't given up hope yet Lecter. Don't you dare crush my hope!
Assuming these mines had IFF and persistence, they could be useful but not absurd (the word balance is a dumb term for VO) by having limited movement and speed and a moderate prox. It's easy to fiddle with the stats once the concept has been created and it is a good concept. The problem is we won't see IFF and persistence in mines for a very long time at this rate.
Do I agree with the suggestion? No comment.
