The whole effect is one. How can you not want to see one part but want to see the other?

I get a significant drop in my frame rate while mining with the new effect. I don't like how a simple activity like mining can be so taxing on my system.
I think what he's talking about disabling effects is that you can disable the new mining effect by setting the graphics>Effects option to off, but doing that also means you lose the blue vortex effect when jumping (which makes jumping seem strange without), and cargo crates won't glow so you cannot see what color they are.

+1. Or even just lower the brightness of the beams.

What I don't like in the new mining effect is that big white thing, like an opaque cloud between your ship and the roid, I find it ugly.
I didn't pay much attention to the performance hit though.

wait why do you care about frame rate when you are sitting there staring at a roid?
We care about framerates in a sector full of bots mining.
I haven't noticed a significant drop in FPS with the new effect. Maybe it's a specific hardware/driver/OS combination?

try disabling full scene glow...
I have a 7 year old comp with a crummy gfx card and the mining effects knock 10-15 fps off my frame rate and make the gfx card hot
but the main thing is I just dont see the point of the new effect ....like im going to sit and stare at it
but I want to see particles in ion storms and glowing cargo drops and weapons fire
so turning off effects is not a good idea

I like the new FX, it looks a heck of a lot better than just a boring laser beam.
What kind of card/driver do you have? My old laptop's i945 isn't really affected by it that much, and it's a piece of crap!

I have a pentiumD with nvidea gt610 gfx and mining effects and fake convoys knock me down to 15 fps
I have a Radeon HD 2600 and the mining effects drop it to 20-30. It's not the frame drop that bothers me so much as the extra heat generated by my gfx card.
I have not noticed a frame drop from the fake convoys.

please lose the mining effects or at least give us an on/off

We aren't going to "lose" the mining effects. It makes the visuals of other players/bots mining look far better than previously, which is one of the first things a new player sees. And we're getting constantly beaten up over graphical quality by the public.
We will look at some kind of simplifying option.

as if the laundry list weren't long enough: can you attach the bright glowing cloud the beam creates to the contact point with the asteroid, and not a set distance from the ship? it looks real silly once you move around that the "burn point" stays with the ship and not the roid.
